Jack Kirby and Batman v Darksied

Jack Kirby was an amazing creator. In a lot of ways Stan Lee was the heart of the Marvel universe, Jack was it's life force. Those 2 were never as good apart as together but if you look at their work without each other, its very clear that Jack was a creative dynamo. Jack had a hand in or created characters like Captain America, Sandman, the Eternals, the New Gods and so many more. With Stan he created almost all the great, classic characters of the Marvel universe. The Fantastic Four, Silver surfer, the Black Panther, Spider-man, the Hulk, Nick Fury, Thor, the Avengers, the X-men and many more.Stan Lee is a legend and his writing was excellent and still stands the test of time but he was not a creator. Stan Lee's creations outside of Kirby were meager by comparison to Kirby.

Kirby sat at his drawing board and designed everything. He redesigned human anatomy into a geometric shaped receptacles of power. He created characters, plots, storylines, he with Joe Simon created romance comics, he created new ways of drawing, he gave us action in comics in ways that no one else could. He wrote a lot of his work. Jack's only weakness is that when he wrote his books, they lacked the polish and slickness of a Stan Lee written book. Stan Lee was a great writer and an even better editor and promoter.

When I drew this pic of Batman v Darksied, I thought of Jack and how much fun it was to draw one of his characters. Jack was a designer of legendary proportions. There was a tiny bit of Jack guiding my pen as I drew his amazing creation. I grew up with Jack. I was a DC fan as a kid until I saw Jack's Fantastic Four, I was hooked. I tried to draw like Jack but I cold not so I tried to learn from him. I am still learning from him.

Neat, I like the kelley jones influence plus taking it your own direction.

I like kirbys later work... Even his dialogue. I think he was stylizing the writing just as he did the art...... Making it abbreviated rather than naturalistic.

But I'm not an expert on him, that's just an off the cuff impression.

Also his later work like 2001, had some amazingly heavy themes and ideas that were prescient about the future.

Good point on Jack's writing. I have not read Jack's writing in many years so maybe I should give it another look. I did not read 2001 or even the Prisoner book he did.

As for Kelly Jones,, he is a weird artist. He uses a ton of ink, his work is cartoony and exaggerated and I love it. I would bet his stuff comes mostly out of his head, he has probably not used reference in decades and he is as good as he was when he did his initial Batman run. Jones has inspired me to cartoon more, exaggerate, design, be more unreal.Batman is a perfect character to do that with because of his design with the ears and the iconic shape shifting cape. Thanks for noticing Jones influence, been looking at his recent Swamp Thing run for inspiration.
