Draw-004: The Last Unicorn with a chance at publication

The collection of the Last Unicorn is being prepped. Renae and Ray have been charged with finding artists for a couple pin-ups to be printed in the collection. Ray suggested a Digital Draw-Off with the top pieces being published.

Ray and Renae will be picking the finalists for print. Their editor at IDW will have the final say.

This is is a contest sponsored by Ray and Renae and not IDW.

The contest is divided into 2 groups (over 16 and 16 and under). The chosen image from the 16 and under group will be inked and colored by Ray Dillon.

The art can be any scene from the Last Unicorn story but CANNOT feature designs from the movie. If you're not familiar with the story, pick up the comic or read the summary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Unicorn

All entries will need to be print ready to be considered for print (at least 300 DPI).

16+ winners need to find a quality team to ink and color and make it professional quality for publication.

16 and under winner will be inked and colored by me.

The over 16 group should have color print ready files 6.75 inches by 10.5 inches (300 DPI, CMYK).
The 16 and under group should have print ready pencils 6.75 inches by 10.5 inches (300 DPI) for Ray to finish. If you're in the under 16 group, be sure to note that in your post title.
Posted art should be web ready and not print ready.

Deadline is Friday 27 August 2010 11:59:59 Eastern.
The deadline has been extended, so if you haven't posted an image, post one now.

Ray and Renae will pick the winners.

Post your art below.

Character from the story

Unicorn- not too horsey, slender build, longer neck, head like a dear, tail like a lion, hair or feathers around cloven hooves. Color of new fallen snow

Shmendrick - Bumbling magician cursed to stay forever young until he learns magic. Early twenties, larger nose, tall, wise eyes, young face

Molly Grue- Hard woman in her late 30's who's known a tough life. Bare feet, raggy clothes. Sharp features. Starts book older looking, but ends up looking younger.

Amalthea (unicorn turned human) - Beautiful young woman. Same coloring as Unicorn, so pale with white hair, also mark on her forehead where horn would have been.

Prince Lir - Son of King Haggard. He's the typical 'hero' who falls in love with Amalthea. Friendly looking & handsome

King Haggard - Taller than Shmendrick, never ever been happy, feels contempt for most everything. No beard, short hair, long features, very old but strong looking.

Red Bull - Color of old blood (deep red) "sweats light" larger than life, horns very pale, blind, very powerful, magical immortal creature.

Captain Cully and his Band - sort of like Robin Hood and Merry Men but 'gone to seed', or as if they've been unsuccessful. Cully around 40 and full of self, let me know if other details of his band are needed.

Mommy Fortuna- Old witch who runs a carnival

Yay! Thanks Jamal!

The reason we wanted to do the younger contest is because we really wanted to give some kids a chance to get published. So hopefully a bunch enter!

Also if there ends up being a lot of entries, I'll try to find more spots to be printed.

Let me know if anyone needs help

You can use whatever method you like to make the finished product It's doesn't HAVE to be inked. I have one person already who just did a painted piece.

There's a lot of inkers & colorists on these boards you could collaborate with if you need help too. Asking for a partner in those respective forums might be a good idea for those who need help.

I'd love to see people's pencils posted along the way too!

What size does it need to be and for the print version does it matter the file format? (JPEG, PDF.)

Thanks.

Finished image should be 6.75 inches by 10.5 inches. JPEG is fine!

There's a lot of new people trying to sign up for Digital Webbing for the contest but they can't get their account verified for some reason. So until they fix this, if anyone has art they want to post, send it to Rayd@GoldenGoatStudios.com & we'll post it for you But please send the smaller versions. For newbies they should be resized at around 500 pixels wide for posting on here.

I would love to see progression scans too!

Ideally it needs to be 300dpi or bigger to start with.

If you're scanning a drawing then your scanner software should have an option to choose the scanning resolution.

If you're in Photoshop creating a new document there is an option to choose the resolution there. if you need to resize a document that already exists in Photoshop you can do so by going to Image > Image Size and changing it too 300dpi.

Taking an image with a resolution less than 300dpi and increasing it will usually result in a poor quality, often slightly blurry copy as the computer "makes up" the extra pixels.
