That's because I'm asking a question for which you have no answer.

You also aren't capitulating to your own demands:

You are entitled to your opinion; I never made any statement to the contrary. What you are not entitled to is your own reality, which is what you are pushing in opposition to things as they are. You said that Kickstarter is an assemblage of panhandlers; I disproved that with logic and facts, both of which you were seemingly ignorant of before I told you.

You are no longer ignorant, but your pride is refusing to allow you to admit defeat on a minor point. If you had seen reason, I may have concluded that you were not a troll. Instead, you've proven yourself to be here for no reason other than causing petty squabbles and baiting people into your dingy mental equivalent of a public restroom. I'm no longer interested in playing your games.

EDIT: Oh, and as to the Nazi thing -- I don't know what country you live in, but that would be considered libel in the United States, particularly in a semi-professional discussion forum such as this. I'm not the litigious type, but others may be, so I cordially advise you to not do it again.

Just on a related topic, The Ministry for Culture and Heritage here in New Zealand recently announced that is has given the go ahead for the Arts Foundation to supplement government arts project funding with a crowdfunding type initiative to raise philanthropic funds for arts projects: http://www.boosted.org.nz/

Quote:
Boosted will have an important point of difference. Projects will not offer rewards in return for pledges. This is to protect the charitable status of donations. The Arts Foundation knows people support projects because they want to be part of their success, not for direct rewards.
I was curious if equivalent initiatives based on the crowdfunding model, but organized by government agencies operated in the United States (or elsewhere)?

No, you didn't. I was already aware of how the KS business model works before I ever heard of you. My opinion is that it is a form of panhandling. Read the Gawker article.

You have just inadvertently admitted that a "troll" is merely anyone who disagrees with you. I accept your apology.

That is demonstrably untrue.

Ah, so now you intimate nebulous litigation, since you can't lock me in an airtight room with a can of Zyklon-B.

Donations to organizations that meet certain criteria as being Not-For-Profit charities can be tax-deductible. Many state and local governments give grants to artistic endeavors — some friends of mine applied for a grant from our city to cover the expense of attending a comics convention. Funding for the arts at a national level has always been a contentious political topic.

If Kickstarter is an assemblage of panhandlers, and it works well for producing some good comics.
What is the problem?
Long life to Kickstarter’s panhandling then!
They help to produce Womantology and many other good comics books as “Sweets”by Kody Chamberlain.
Hurra!
These are the winners.

Sure, whatever works. Just don't act indignant when someone accurately describes the process as what it is — panhandling.

It's not panhandling. That's just silly.

Backers are buying products and/or services with their pledges.

Exactly. I never understood those who call it panhandling. Kickstarter REQUIRES you to set up incentives, so anyone that pledges funds gets a product or service in return. It's pre-sales if you want to call it anything, not panhandling by any stretch.

No, they're not. Once again, words have meanings. A pledge is not a purchase. If the enticements were the purpose for the pledges, there was already a website where this kind of business transaction could take place — it's called eBay.

And it's funny how, when faced with the criticism that sometimes the enticements are not delivered (as has been at least a few cases), the argument shifts to selflessly supporting creativity without desire for a direct return.

What is Kickstarter's enforcement policy to ensure those incentives are delivered?

Then submit your proposals to Diamond. That truly is a pre-sales solicitation model and will save the appearance of panhandling.

We have 2,001 backers and 2,001 paid rewards to fullfill.

Our book is through Diamond. They gave it a 2-page spotlight.

Kind of the reverse here in New Zealand. Getting funded at a district and local level is a lot harder than the national level (which isn't to say that's much easier). At the national level the government has contestable funding rounds through agencies like Creative New Zealand, New Zealand on Air, Maori Broadcasting Authority, and the Arts Foundation.

What this is, is called sponsoring.
And the backers of these pledges are sponsors on such projects.
