Hunt 102 lifespan?

I just started using a hunt 102 (have been inking with brush mostly) and have gone through 2 of them in a period of 2 days. They are speed ball nibs and i noticed pretty much by the end of my page the nibs just stopped putting lines down, i thought it was the ink but even with fresh ink the nib simply won't put lines down.

Does anyone else come across this problem? I love inking with these nibs but if i have to buy a new one every page that's going to add up real fast.

try flipping the nib over and pressing it down on a solid surface to force the two points closer together. Do it gently. Or you could keep a bottle of water next to the ink and dip it into the water before dipping into the ink. But eventually because we tend to lean one way or the other as we draw lines that part of the nib will wear and then there is no connection for the ink to flow down. Try to ink with the handle nearly vertical.

Hunt 102 lifespan, it should be at least, when it is well used,
enough for ink 22/24 pages.

Before I stopped using them I got maybe 14 or so pages out of one nib. It's the fine lines that go first, so using the flip trick above does help that at first.

Going from brush to nibs? Any reason for that?

14 pages? Yeah i guess i need to try that tip out, I clean it constantly though so i don't think the water will do much help. I was pretty much exclusively a brush guy, all my favorite inkers were brush guys, when i was starting out I met Sean Murphy at a con and he told me he did almost everything in brush, so i figured i need to learn how to use brush- after that whenever i used a nib the moment inked stopped flowing i got tired of it and went back to brush. I'm working with an artist now on a project and he likes his pencils inked with thinner sharper lines, so i figured now is the time to learn the hunt 102 finally. I can't believe how much easier it is to feather with a crow quill, in general i love the tool except for how problematic it is. I went through 2 nibs in the past few days (been inking a lot) and the first one was problematic right from the get go (apparently you're suppose to put the nib over a flame briefly to get a coding off, i didn't do that the first time), i couldn't get nice lines out of it at first and i must have cleaned it after every 4 lines because they stopped flowing. The second nib was amazing, i loved inking with it and then all of a sudden next day it just stopped putting lines down. So overall i love the hunt 102 but i really need to learn how to take care of them and keep up their life span. Is there a specific brand that is better than the speed ball ones?

I use the water to keep the surface of the nib slick s the inks will flow easier. When i first get the nibs i use an exacto on it to scrape off the film. Flame will warp the metal. There are a few places on line you can but 12 nibs with 12 holders for like 20 bucks or so. pretty good deal. Gillott makes a very good nib. Name drop, Karl Story showed me his Gillott and how it worked. It's a little more flexible than the Hunts 102 so it's easier to lay down long lines You could try the Hunts 107. It's a bit stiffer. There's also the Deleter nibs.

I've used the Deleter nibs that look like the 102's. They were pretty good. But they are closer to the hunts 107 than 102. Story let me do a few ink lines with his Gillott, it's like inking with a slightly stiffer brush. But they are pricey and can only be found on either ebay or from the UK.
I can get about 200 sketch cards out of one 102 nib before it just won't work because one side is worn down. I should try inking left handed and alternate just to see what happens.

I dont know about you... But inking left handed for me would be like jerking off left handed. Akward, weird, difficult to get results.

It's all in the mind. Frazetta, after his stroke had to switch to his left hand to paint.
