Both flicks were boring. When you have actors in the flick talking to the audience and explaining to the audience what the theme of the movies are you just know that something aint kosha.

Welcome to the fold.

IMHO, here's how it breaks down...

Batman Begins - We're constantly sold repackaged origins because they 'work'.

However, this also had Katie Holmes... that in and of itself may seem like no big whoop, but don't forget this was around the time she and Cruise were frolicking about together.

At the time, I had to tell more than one person "No, Tom Cruise isn't playing Batman." Casual observers, and all that.

Dark Knight Rises - We're constantly sold reimagined characters because they 'work'.

Heath Ledger passes away, and, I shit you not, people are talking about giving him an Oscar before the film is even released. People said TDK was "the next Godfather" and rated it one of the top movies ever made in the history of film.

If that doesn't sound like an overreaction to even the biggest TDK fan, then I don't know what to tell you. If we can agree it's an overreaction, then we can possibly agree that ALL the hubub about how good the film was may be tainted with the same overblown... over... overblowedness.

Examining the state of affairs related to TDKR, we've SEEN the origin... we've SEEN a heavily reinvented character... there's no celebrity drama surrounding it (look for them to create some)... and it's probably unlikely any of the actors are going to actually pass away.

They don't even strain their brains enough to come up with a different title. Call this film "The Shadow of the Bat" and tell me it doesn't seem a hair more interesting.

So yeah. It looks boring without the meta thrills. Maybe some folks can now see how the rest of us looked at the first two films...

Edit: Almost forgot... Begins had multiple villains never realized onscreen... DK had a swinging reinvention of the MOST beloved Bat-Baddie... TDKR has overdone Catwoman and largely unknown Bane. Comes off as a mistake to me. The films shouldn't be all about the villains... but they kind of are. Especially the Nolan films, which explore the bad guys while leaving Bruce a cypher.

Then again, maybe that's the intention - to finally focus on the main character?

I'm sure there's someone with a PDF on his computer somewhere who'll warn you to, "wear a diaper."
