When every comic book fan on this earth is watching The Avengers on premiere night...

... I was watching Green Lantern on a *arrr*ated DVD.

It was shit. My gut feeling was right. Glad I didn't watch it in the theater.

They put a lot of stuff from Geoff Johns' GL Secret Origin, but failed to create a convincing Green Lantern. Unlike what Chris Evans did in Captain America where he embraced the role of being a stoic superhero, Ryan Reynolds played a rom com version of Hal Jordan.

I don't know, I think it would have been far better if the movie Hal Jordan was portrayed less as a reckless wuss with confidence/daddy issues and closer to the personality of Cliff Secord (The Rocketeer).

It's a pity, because if you can make Green Lantern work as a movie then a JLA movie coudn't have been far behind.

Having done a bit of reading for a new sketch card set I'm on, the way DC is treating GL is pretty much the same as the Movie. They made him a dumbass jock screw up.

Still not seen this, and since i like the character but heard so many, many bad things about this film i really don't plan on doing so

It begs the question though (since it was a big flop), have WB/DC got their act together and started to plot out a movie universe, it's crazy because they have been in the perfect position to do it way before Marvel because they own the movie right to all of their characters with WB don't they?

They have no clue. They planned and was about to start a JL flick but shelved it. Funny but the JL can be done without any connecting flicks to boost it up. Everyone knows SuperFriends.

Prior to DCpU (see what I did there?), Green Lantern was one of the best written super hero comes for more than a few years.

The irony is, Marvel created the Ultimates universe which became more or less the source material for most of it's movies. DC has gone the opposite and purposely tried to "Hollywood-ize" it's properties.

I agree with this, basically. There's no way anyone is going to for an Aquaman movie unless he's done right in JL first, for example. Wonder Woman deserves a film before a team-up, though, and arguably Flash as well. I'm just not sure I trust Warner not to fuck something like that up.

Also, as far as I can tell, JL is still on the backburner. We'll probably here more about it once Nolan is out of the picture in regard to Batman.

All the main characters from the JL have been rebooted into meatheads by the idiots at DC and these are the versions you see on tv and at the movies. The new Superman looks and probably will act just like the meathead from DC's 52. Same with how they tried to make WW into just a battle crazed Amazon. The only way to downplay the meatheadedness of DC's new JL it has to be a movie with no connection aside from the mutual threat. People already know Supes and Bats and WW for the most part So Flash and GL would need a wee bit fleshing out but that's it. Throw Darkseid at the earth and have the JL woop on im.

On topic: The GL movie was so much crap. I can't even tell you how much I disliked that movie. It only proved to me that DC got lucky with the Nolan Batman movies, and they still don't know how to make an interesting movie of their properties.

There are two big reasons why Marvel beats DC in movies.

1) Marvel produces their own movies in-house, and their own creators are often involved. They don't hand it out to someone else, so they keep a real sense of connection to the comics and respect for the source.

2) Marvel gets talented people to write and direct character driven stories. first and foremost. They care about story and characters. DC (after sourcing their properties out) is thinking more about big name casting, summer blockbusters, and marketing tie-ins. Certainly Marvel does this too, I'm sure, but my point is this: Marvel puts story and character first (substance), where DC puts dollar signs first (style).

It just all comes down to a sense of identity; and a respect for their history, stories, and fans. Marvel seems to genuinely care, and DC would trade it all for a quick buck.

The problem goes something like this:

Marvel owns a production studio. DC is owned by a production studio. Even though Disney has bought Marvel, they've largely only been distributing the films so far, with little to no interference in the actual production as far as anyone can tell. The people at Marvel know how to handle their characters, whereas Warner has been unnecessarily heavy-handed in changing things up whenever a DC character gets adapted.

There are people (*coughGeoffJohnsandJMScough*) who DC effectively has "in house" and could help make rockin' DC-based movies if Warner would let them. Green Lantern wasn't as bad as some said, but compared to what it could have been, it was absolutely dreadful. The closest thing they have to someone coordinating their productions right now is Chris Nolan. As much as I like his Batman movies, he has no personal attachment to the characters the way Marvel's people do, and his imaginative scope for coordinating something on the order of a shared movie universe is insanely limited.

The creators that DC involve with their film adaptations are the worst in the business...Marc Guggenheim. They just had to have him on the GL movie since he's written crappy TV shows AND a few crappy comics. No way he could mess up a GL movie, right?

The way I see it, DC's New 52 is basically Heroes Reborn with DC characters. Not surprising with Jim Lee in charge. Hell, even Rob Liefeld get to write Hawkman now. The Hal Jordan I read recently in New 52's JLA behaves a lot more like the movie Hal Jordan, or as you say, a meathead.

I'm not liking DC very much these days.

I love the new Batman with Scott Snyder and Capullo, but I haven't been a fan of the other books I've read.

DC has gone downhill IMO. Both in the comics and especially their film adaptations of their characters. Letting Lim Lee and Dan Didio take over and just throw away over 75 years of history was a huge fuckup IMO. I haven't bought any of the new DC books since they've took over and I don't have any intention to. The Green Lantern film was a joke. There were so many screwups as far as continuity went , I thought I was going to puke. Superman returns was also another piece of grabage as well ,and it looks like the new film that's coming out with Henry Cavill will probably suck as well. Sure the Batman films by Nolan have done good, once you get past the horrible Bat Suits that look like armor , but other than that DC needs to have their own production company like Marvel does, when it comes to making films of their properties. Also, fire Jim Lee & Didio and bring back the old DC universe.
