Hey guys.

The art has started to roll in for my upcoming comic book Sidekicks, and I wanted to start a thread where I can keep everyone updated on the progress.

You can also "Like" us on Facebook at: Sidekicks (https://www.facebook.com/sidekickscomics)

About Sidekicks

In a world where Super-Heroes are celebrities, egos rampage out of control. Five of Chicago’s most dependable Sidekicks are faced with the reality that despite their dedication, they will invariably be disrespected by the Heroes they work with and the citizens they protect. Taken for granted by society and ignored by the media, how much can the Sidekicks endure before they decide they’ve had enough?

Co-Created by Russell Brettholtz (writer) and Miguel Mendonça (artist)

Either the first cover or the last one.

If you want to start getting into the story right away, I'd go with the last cover. If you're just into the image, then the first one.

Personally, I'd to with the last cover. I like it, and it makes a statement.

Yeah... the last one! Though I liked the 3rd one too. But the last one really drives home what the comic is about! Good job!

Thanks for the comments.

I had initially asked for a "team" shot for the cover. But my artist felt inspired and put the other three together.

I'm glad he did. My wife immediately said to go with the last one. It really does just capture the theme of the book (and will likely be the cover I go with).

Stay tuned.

I like the intention of the second one, and the last one.

The second has scope for a crowd scene at the back gawping at the Hero, although I'm not sure where you'd go with the background on the last.
Overall I think its a sterling concept.

Have you read Adam Warren's 'Empowered'?

I like all of these, but have to agree the last is the most "clear" in its meaning, etc.

Just wanted to let you know that you can now follow Sidekicks on Twitter: @SidekicksComix

(now all I have to do is learn how to use Twitter. Damn you Renae and your professional advice)

Renae De Liz
03-26-2013, 11:51 PM
Followed! :D Don't worry, soon you'll be typing everything in perfect 140 characters sections like a pro!

NOW what you need to do is start following A LOT of people. Specifically people who are good to make contact with in the industry (editors, publishers, writers, artists, colorists) and start making twitter friends by Retweeting/favoriting things they say of interest, and replying to posts. Be professional and personable. Eventually Sidekicks will gain a good sized following on Twitter, and that can open a lot of doors for you (not to mention followers are invaluable help to spread word during a Kickstarter) :)

Also, if SideKicks is needing a publisher, I'd put something about "currently seeking a publisher!" in your description (that way anyone interested will know instantly if you're available).

Finally, post occasional art clips/links to website entries about characters every couple days as to keep up a steady flow of Sidekicks awareness to your followers.

Go Sidekicks Twitter, Go!

About the Creators

About the Writer

Russell Brettholtz started reading comic books at the age of eight, when his grandmother gave him an Archie. At twelve he graduated to the X-Men which he collected for over twenty years. Russell’s road to writing comics began with X-Men fan-fiction in high school and college, and finally a story submission to Marvel (it was not published). He took a break from comics to spend more time with his family (and read, watch TV, and write a screenplay – which is now collecting dust on a shelf). Russell returned to writing comic books when he realized that finding an artist and self-publishing were realistic possibilities thanks to the internet. Sidekicks is his first full length comic book with original characters. Russell lives in New York’s capital region with his wife and two daughters.

About the Artist

Even though Miguel Mendonça graduated in Design and has been doing mostly design related work, this Portuguese artist has always had a special bond with the world of illustration, the comics and art in general. He is now working more and more with comics and doing several projects in this field. Examples of his artwork can be found at http://miguelmendoncacomics.blogspot.com.

Meet the Sidekicks

Phantasm aka Richard

Richard is having a bad week. Not only did his fiancée leave him two months before the wedding, but as Phantasm, he is the sidekick to Mr. Marvelous, Chicago’s most popular super-hero. Unfortunately for Richard, Mr. Marvelous suffers from an inflated ego, and pulls no punches when reminding Richard of the Hero / Sidekick dynamic: Mr. Marvelous is beloved; Phantasm is replaceable. Anyone who has ever been mistreated, underappreciated or disrespected by their boss should be able to identify with Richard.

Powers: Phantasm can create and control solid light projections.

An interesting thing to get hung up on. Particularly when you conisder the lack of true originality in just about any creative medium.

Oh well. You can't please everyone (and only a fool would try).

It isn't about pleasing everyone. In a creative business, it's about trying to please the greatest amount of people, while not alienating those whom you possibly could please.

There area some whom you're never going to please. For them, don't. They, however, are going to be very vocal. I call them the vocal minority. Most of the silent majority will just stand by and watch. They'll buy, but not actively engage otherwise. You'll know who's who after about three issues. You'll also know if you're telling an engaging story after about three issues. The trouble is, three issues is a very large investment in time, money, and effort. Most don't have the wherewithal to last three issues. Most are done after one.

I'm counting on the Tag Line (Dedicated / Dependable / Disrespected) to convey the story concept to those just looking at the cover.

Hm. Interesting choice of words.

Meet the Sidekicks

Mustang aka Dan

Dan is the de facto leader of the Sidekicks group. Attractive, smart and easy going, as Mustang he is the most popular sidekick in the city. Dan is relatively oblivious to the difficulties shared by his fellow sidekicks. Dan is on course for a major life lesson as Mustang’s popularity threatens to overshadow that of Captain Celerity, the super-hero he sidekicks for (yes, I used sidekick as a verb).

Powers: Mustang can shoot plasma blasts from his hands.

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/SidekicksComics/Pre-Design/Mustang2_zps5345d6de.jpg

This is the first design attempt for Mustang.

First off, the cowl is going. I think it will look much better with just a domino mask so we can see more of Dan's face (not to mention his hair).

We're also going to alter the white design work on the arms and legs. Try to come up with something a little sleeker.

The term "Sidekick Syndrome" is one that comes to mind when thinking of the squire to the knight of the superhero world. That could be a direction you can take, making it sound like it's a common occurrence, almost a disease.

As for Mustang, don't go with the domino mask. Go with goggles. It makes for a nice design element. My question would be, why call him mustang if his power isn't speed?

Finally, I'm available for editing at a reasonable rate. You can contact me at scolle_creativesynergy@hotmail.com if interested in finding out more.

Thank, Steve. I already have someone who edits for me (and there's simply no more money to be spent in pre-production).

There's actually a discussion in the book between Richard and Dan about why he's called Mustang. It's all part of the deconstruction of super-hero comic books that are a minor sub-text to Sidekicks.

Meet the Sidekicks

Jolt aka Al

Al is the youngest sidekick at 22. The recession is hitting Al particularly hard as he struggles to keep his finances above water. But when his car dies he can’t even get a loan from the Flying Fox, the hero he’s been working with for five years. A hero who also happens to be a millionaire. Al is forced to get a job at a fast food burger joint in order to make ends meet. He is living on the edge and coming dangerously close to falling off. The stress is getting to be too much for Al, as he lashes out at those he has spent years protecting.

Powers: Jolt can generate electricity and shoot electric blasts.

Atlas aka George

George is the conscience of the Sidekicks. A devout Catholic, he spends most of his free time working in a soup kitchen, feeding the homeless. George truly believes that helping people is its own reward. But when Atlas leaves the side of the hero he works with to save an innocent bystander, he gets an earful about to whom his assistance lies.

Powers: Atlas is super-strong.

Meet the Sidekicks

Frostbite aka Walter

Mild-mannered and cool headed, Walter is the assistant editor at the Chicago Herald newspaper. While Heroes get the front page and glowing praise, their sidekicks don’t even merit a footnote. Every day Walter is reminded of how the media ignores the sidekicks and how society in general takes them for granted.

Powers: Frostbite can freeze objects near him and shoot ice blasts from his hands.

Meet Mr. Marvelous:

Mr. Marvelous is Chicago’s most popular super-hero. Beloved by the people and police alike, Mr. Marvelous spends his days flying above the city looking for villains to thwart. Confident and egotistical, he has little patience for advice and disdain for criticism; even if it is coming from his own sidekick.

Powers: Mr. Marvelous is invulnerable and can fly.

Just curious, Russ... why did you pick Chicago for your story's location? and not create a fictional superhero-style city?

It probably has to do with my reading mainly Marvel comics. Marvel operates in "real" cities, so my writing followed suit.

But I didn't want to use New York or Los Angeles (of any other major coastal city) since that's so overdone.

Chicago was a nice choice because it's a large city but not on the coast (and I've been there before, as opposed to, say, Houston).

MR. MARVELOUS is hovering in the air, punching INFERNO in the face. INFERNO is wearing a jet pack and holding a money bag. Across the street from him, three HENCHMEN are trapped by a giant, yellow, disembodied hand. (Day)

Sidekick - JMS says he's always liked the idea of the sidekick - kind of 'Robin the boy hostage'. In this comic, The Cowl (because he wears a cowl) is murdered leaving Flyboy ('cause he's a boy who can fly) to try to solf the mystery while struggling to be accepted, even to accepting corporate sponsorships. It's a descent into madness.

It's not like my book is going to be on a shelf next to this one. I'm not terrible concerned.

Panel 1: INFERNO is hurling a fireball at MR. MARVELOUS. MR. MARVELOUS seems unconcerned by it.

Panel 2: PHANTASM is “pushing” the three henchmen still held by the hand to two police officers who are getting out of their squad cars. POLICEMAN 1 is pointing into the sky.

Panel 3: MR. MARVELOUS is grabbing INFERNO by the chest and smashing him into the side of a brick building destroying part of the wall.

Panel 4: A crowd has formed on the sidewalk to watch the fight. The crowd does not notice the debris that is falling toward them from the damaged wall. PHANTASM is creating a giant, yellow carpet to catch the debris.

Panel 5: MR. MARVELOUS is floating down to the ground. He has an unconscious (and beat up) INFERNO in a headlock. Several people are taking pictures. MR. MARVELOUS is mugging to the cameras.

Panel 6: MR. MARVELOUS is giving INFERNO to the police. Two more police cars have arrived on the scene. The surrounding crowd has grown huge.

Noob question - why is that important?

Noob question - why is that important?

You want the eye to flow across the page correctly.

We read (American) comics from left to right. On even-numbered pages, you want the action to lead "into" the book, especially for splash pages. If you're on an even numbered page and the action flows from right to left, then you're leading the eyes "out" of the book. Go pick up a comic and take a look at it. You'll see exactly what I mean.

I've written a lot of Bolts & Nuts columns deconstructing what happens on the page and the writer's job to help facilitate reading the comic. Now, if the writer has done their job, they've written the action from left to right. The artist's job is to lead the eye. If they aren't, then they aren't doing their job correctly.

This is where having an editor comes in handy. Script editing is fine, but it can only do so much. If the editor is also managing the project, they would have caught this.

(It still needs to be flipped, anyway, even if it were an odd-numbered page. This way, the eyes would be led to the edge of the page, where the page-turn is, so that they can continue reading. This makes for a slightly schizoid reading experience. I noticed something very similar in a recent issue of Waid's Daredevil. It was an odd-numbered page, but instead of the final panel leading to the right, it led back to the left, "into" the book. Jumped right out at me as wrong, and while I know that Waid and the artist knew better, I think it was a matter of scripting and layout so that there was no other choice but to do it like that.)

I hope that answers your question. If not, let me know, and I'll find another way to explain it.

Also, I do suggest going to ComixTribe.com and reading all the Bolts & Nuts articles. Currently, there are 125 consecutive weeks. Start from the beginning and work your way through. There is a LOT of information there.

You can also submit to The Proving Grounds for an editorial look at your scripts. You're guaranteed that your script will get looked at by two professional editors. The wait is also currently short. I'd read a few of them before submitting, though, so you know exactly what you'd be getting into.

Russbrett, I'm glad I found this thread- the comic sounds really interesting and looks great so far and I'm always interested in seeing the process behind when a comic begins.

I've browsed the 4 pages of the thread but didn't read too in depth- do you have any finished pages yet or is it all the design/promo and layout work? Does the artist have a webpage (or DeviantArt) we can visit?

Also, how are you enjoying the process of hiring someone to do the art for you? Have you done this type of thing before?

Best of luck to you, by the way, can't wait to see more.

Jesse,

Thank you for the kind words. I am currently waiting on my artist to complete a 4 page preview which we'll eventually use to Kickstart the comic. He has currently completed the final pencils for 3 of those pages. Since he is also inking, coloring and lettering, we don't expect to launch until September.

You can see more of his work here: http://miguelmendoncacomics.blogspot.com/

He was also recently published in Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed #1.

I have never done this before. While I have some small experience with writing, this is the first time I hired an artist to actually produce a comic (though, in retrospect, I probably should have hired separate people to color and letter - but I wanted to keep things as simple as possible for my first time out). I didn't even know what dpi meant when I started this project.

MR. MARVELOUS is hovering in the air, punching INFERNO in the face. INFERNO is wearing a jet pack and holding a money bag. This is a classic “Hero Shot.” In the background, PHANTASM is standing in the street. He is holding his arm out as if he is holding a beer can. Across the street from him, three HENCHMEN are trapped by a giant, yellow, disembodied hand.

Thought I'd share some more of the concept art while we wait.

Thanks for the comment. I could not be happier with the ability of my artist. From the first time I saw his work I knew he was the artist for this comic.

Thank you for the FB Like. It's appreciated.

And I know about JMS's book. From what I've read, aside from the title, the two books aren't going to have all that much in common, so I'm not terribly concerned about it (and let's face it; what's the worst that can happen? He sues me? I could use the publicity).

Good page, but there are small things that would make it better.

The cape in panel 5 needs to be contained within the border. Having it break the border and then be under panel 3 is awkward especially with the tangent formed by the tip of the cape. Making the right arm that's breaking out of the panel point further to the left of the page would leave the reader better into panel 6, but I would argue that panel 5 should lead better towards the small figure in panel 6.

I'm also very excited to announce that Singer/Songwriter Steve Schultz has agreed to compose the original score for the video. You can find a link to one of his popular music videos below.

Have a very Happy New Year, everyone!

The Kickstarter for Sidekicks - Chapter One will launch at the end of January.

We will spend the next 4 weeks counting down to the launch and announcing the various rewards for backers.

Thanks for a great 2013!

russbrett

With the Kickstarter campaign just weeks away, I thought it best to highlight some of the rewards you will be able to get.

So, for the next three Mondays we will be doing just that.

Please feel free to comment or message us if there is a particular reward you would be interested in. We certainly didn't think of everything.

Reward #1: ALL backers will have their name included in a "Thank You" note posted right here on our Facebook page.

Reward #2: A PDF copy of Sidekicks.

Reward #3: A print copy of Sidekicks (what we in the industry call a "floppy").

Reward #4: Your name will be included in the "Thank You" section of the comic book (tentatively titled the "Wall of Sidekicks." Yeah, we know that name kind of stinks. Come up with a better name and.. well, I'm sure I'll think of some kind of reward).

More rewards next week.

Kickstarter rewards continued...

Reward #5: A "Behind the Scenes" PDF featuring all of the artwork from the comic (character concepts, rough pencils, final pencils, inks, and colors), plus the original script.

Reward #6: An "Advance View" of the comic. As each page of artwork is created (including all stages from rough pencils to lettered pages), you will receive a PDF of that page.

Reward #7: A print copy of Sidekicks signed by Writer/Co-Creator Russell Brettholtz.

Reward #8: A print copy of Sidekicks signed by Artist/Co-Creator Miguel Mendonça AND Writer/Co-Creator Russell Brettholtz.

(This reward is limited (not to mention costly) because of the logistical nightmare of having to ship the comics back and forth to Portuegal for the artist to sign. But it will be worth it)

The last of the rewards will be announced next week.

Kickstarter rewards concluded...

Reward #9: A poster of the Cover of Sidekicks.

Reward #10: A poster of Page 8 (Mr. Marvelous fighting Inferno).

Reward #11: A cameo appearance in the comic (your likeness - and maybe even your name - will appear in the book).

Reward #12: An original page of penciled art from the comic.

Reward #13: A cameo appearance in the comic PLUS the original penciled page that you appear on.

Rewards #11-13 are limited to five each.

That's it folks. If everything goes right, next Monday I should be announcing the launch of the Kickstarter campaign and providing the link to the website.

Thanks for taking this journey with us.

The Kickstarter for my comic book is finally LIVE!

Please check it out and become a Backer.

And please share this with anyone you know who enjoys comic books, superheroes, or just likes supporting aspiring artists.

Thanks, everyone!

And please leave a comment on Kickstarter letting me know how you learned about Sidekicks on digitalwebbing. Marketing an independent comic book is very difficult and time consuming, and every little bit of information helps.

Sidekicks was featured on the Canned Air Podcast!

Head on over to the site and listen to the Canned Air gang talk about all things comic book related.

Caution: They do have the tendency to be a bit profane at times.

The Podcast is 1 hour 35 minutes of fun comic book conversation. It reminded me of many conversations I would have with my friends back in college.

If you are only interested in what they have to say about Sidekicks feel free to fast forward to the 1 hour 29 minute mark.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

When we reach $6,000 in Pledges, EVERY Backer at the $5 level and above will receive a digital copy of "The Omega Chapters - Book One" by Peter Sefcik.

Peter is the incredible artist on our back-up story, "The Super-Hero's Nightmare" and he has been kind enough to offer the first issue of his creator-owned series as a Stretch Goal Reward.

Thanks, Curt. I appreciate that.

I will definitely keep this thread updated as the comic book is completed.

As of now, the only thing I would have done differently would have been to use a team of artist to create the book. This is my first self-published work and I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. So I looked for one artist who could handle ALL of the illustrating (pencils, inks, colors and letters).

I did not calculate just how much longer it would take to create the book since we were losing the ability to work simultaneously.

For the remainder of the mini-series I will use a team.

Happy Presidents' Day.

Sidekicks Fun Fact:

Phantasm (Richard), Mustang (Dan), Jolt (Al), Atlas (George), and Frostbite (Walter) are named for the most recent former Vice-Presidents of the United States - the ultimate Sidekicks!

Interestingly, only one of them went on to become President (George; and he only lasted one term).

Even the most powerful Sidekicks in the world can't get any respect.

With 11 days to go Sidekicks is 181% funded. We are closing in on our Stretch Goal at $6000.

And once again, I have another Thank You to make.

Comixtribe.com has a very simple message statement: Creators helping creators make better comics.

And they live up to that statement on a daily basis. Tyler James writes the Comix Counsel column on Comixtribe, and I am a devout reader. This Kickstarter would not have been nearly as well put together if it wasn't for the articles Tyler wrote about his own experiences with running a Kickstarter campaign. From concept to execution, the Comix Counsel articles provided an in depth look at the process of Kickstarting a comic book.

If you are an aspiring creator, I can not recommend a better website than comixtribe.com.

Thank You Comixtribe.

(but wait, there's more)

Comixtribe also has a publishing arm. They have some excellent comics in print that I highly recommend.

They are currently running a Kickstarter campaign for their high concept (Ocean's 11 meets X-Men) mini-series, "Scam." I am a Backer, and they are within 10% of reaching their funding goal. Their campaign ends Friday (same as Sidekicks) and if you feel so inclined, please check it out and maybe become a Backer yourself.

The Scepter is one of Chicago's most popular Super-Heroes.

While on an archaeological dig in Egypt as a student pursuing his PHD, AJ discovered the scepter. Upon touching the ancient artifact he could feel its power coursing through him. Keeping the scepter secret, AJ smuggled it back to his apartment in Chicago. Through seemingly endless experimentation, AJ learned how to channel the energy of the scepter to generate blasts, shields, and several other energy manifestations. Running with the Egyptian theme, AJ designed a suitable costume and took up the mantle of The Scepter.

Atlas is The Scepter's sidekick.

Captain Celerity

Captain Celerity is Chicago's fastest super-hero.

As a child, Brian was always fast. And he only got faster as he got older. Realizing that he was one of the lucky few on the planet to be born with super-powers, Brian kept his gift a secret. But not such a secret that he didn't win every race he entered.

Earning a track and field scholarship to a top university, Brian shattered local, state and national records. It wasn't long before the Olympic team came calling. Hungry for the attention and adulation, Brian joined the US Olympic team. In his first Olympic outing, he broke four world records. Four years later, he broke them again (but never by enough to make his feats seem illegitimate).

But the glory of the Olympics soon faded. Brian needed the attention. So he did what any ambitious, self-absorbed, super-powered twenty-something would do: he became a Super-Hero.

Moving to Chicago (a city without another speedster to rival), Brian quickly established himself as Captain Celerity: Chicago's fastest Super-Hero!

Mustang is Captain Celerity's sidekick.

Yin and Yang were originally just generic bank robbers. But frankly, that was boring. Listening to the myriad complaints of the lack of female power in the book, I thought this would be the perfect spot to fill that void.

Hey, everyone!

Please welcome HdE to the Sidekicks team as our new letterer.

In another move to keep this project moving along as quickly as possible, we brought in a new letterer to give Miguel more time to work on the inks.

***
HdE has been lettering since 2010, with credits including the acclaimed 'Legend of Oz: The Wicked West', 'Ursa Minor' and 'Shahrazad' for Big Dog Ink, as well as the UK small press sensation 'Lou Scannon'. There are rumours that he lives in a palatial abode with his wife, the actress Rachel Nichols, where they subsist on a diet of rare game, caviar and fine wine. However, this *could* be completely baseless, and the management take no responsibiliy for any claims made on the internet founded on little more than delusional, sweaty-fingered fantasy.

Besides, have you ever HAD caviar? It ain't that nice. Really.

You can see samples of his work on his blog, here:

The moment I have the finished files, they will be compiled into a PDF and e-mailed to those of you who Backed the project on Kickstarter.

The files will also be sent to our printer to get the physical copies out as quickly as possible (I am currently expecting it to take about a month from sending the files to the printer to mailing copies to Backers).

Project Update: Good News and Bad News

THE GOOD NEWS

Miguel is finished with his work on Zenescope's Warlord of Oz and can devote 100% of his time and attention to Sidekicks. He sent me several pages on Saturday just to show me the progress that he's been making, and they look amazing!

THE BAD NEWS

Miguel fractured his drawing arm on Sunday and won't be able to work for about three weeks. We both feel terrible about this additional delay.

Once Miguel is drawing again I will provide an updated schedule. At this time, it looks like the digital copy of the book should be finished for the end of November, with print copies mailing in late December or early January.

Again, I thank you all for your patience and understanding during the completion of this book.

IN OTHER NEWS

I will be attending New York Comic Con this Thursday October 9 through Sunday October 12. If you're going to be there, just look for the guy wearing the Sidekicks t-shirt, and feel free to stop me and say HI.

For those of you who can't be there, I will be tweeting about my convention experience under the hastag: #two.

Follow along on my Twitter Account: @SidekicksComix (https://twitter.com/SidekicksComix)

Thanks, again, everyone.

This is looking good as far as art direction, and the bits of the story I’ve seen are definitely interesting. A darker, critical view of the attitude of superheroes. This reminds me a bit of some Marshal Law stories in that regard. Arrogance and apathy in such powerful entities would be as common as they were in rulers who possessed absolute power in real history. Good stuff and very different from the norm!

I just stumbled upon this thread. Best of luck to you and your team on the title. I’ll be looking for it.

Damn it! Yet another difference between spec and comic scripts. Because westerners read left to right, cinematographers often use a psychological trick: villains or the antagonist of the scene enter or inhabit the right, with the hero or sympathy character stages left. With that simple logic it’s fairly easy to maintain the 180 rule in regard to camera angle. Now I have to be mindful of not only including a hook in the last panel of even numbered pages, but the action has to point to the left. That would explain why I see the 180 rule being broken from time to time in comics, and or transition panels included to reverse positions.

One of my wife's coworkers is doing a Kickstarter, because they want to convert their screenplay into a comic book.

They believe it's going to be easy: a small format adaptation, and that's about it. She looked at them like they're crazy, because she hears me rail about TPG writers and some of the things they do.

Comic scripting is challenging, no?

This is looking good as far as art direction, and the bits of the story I’ve seen are definitely interesting. A darker, critical view of the attitude of superheroes. This reminds me a bit of some Marshal Law stories in that regard. Arrogance and apathy in such powerful entities would be as common as they were in rulers who possessed absolute power in real history. Good stuff and very different from the norm!

I just stumbled upon this thread. Best of luck to you and your team on the title. I’ll be looking for it.

Thanks for the kind words. We appreciate it.

Progress Report

Hey, everyone!

I had an amazing time at New York Comic Con. I attended lots of great and informative panels. I got to meet many other creators whom I had previously only known through their online presence. And I even got to show Sidekicks off to some publishers (let's see if we can't get this thing on store shelves).

I hope you enjoyed reading along on Twitter.

But now back to business.

Miguel's arm is still healing. He expects to be back in the hospital this week for an exam to let him know when he can start working again. Hopefully, it will be soon.

HdE just sent me the lettered pages from Sara's colors. We now have 10 complete pages for the comic. There is nothing left for us to do until Miguel is working again. Those of you who Backed the Kickstarter and have the Advance View will be seeing those pages shortly. The rest of you will have to wait a bit more.

Again, thank you all for your patience. The goal has always been to deliver the best quality comic book we can create.

I'll check back in with you all soon.

Hey, everyone! Lots of news for this fine Monday.

First, Miguel is 80% healed and back to work. He sent me a new page today and it looks GREAT! So Issue #1 is back on track.

Second, Sidekicks has signed a contract with a Publisher! The current schedule is to have Issue #1 on the shelves for July 2015. So for those of you who will have your name printed in the "Thank You" section of the book or will appear as a Cameo character, prepare to impress your friends when you take them to the store and show them your fame!

Third, Issues #2-4 will be penciled by the AMAZING Bong Dazo! You might know Bong's pencils from such MARVEL titles as: Deadpool: Merc With a Mouth, Avengers: The Initiative, Shadowland: Moon Knight, and War of Kings.

You can see his portfolio here: http://manyacts.deviantart.com/gallery/

As much as Miguel loves being part of the Sidekicks team, he has been working on this project for almost two years and felt it was time to move on to his own personal work. We wish him the best and couldn't be happier to have worked with him in creating this series.

Very exciting news this week! Thank you all for making this dream a reality.

--Russell

PS: You may have noticed I mentioned there are 3 issues left (for a total of 4). That's right! Sidekicks is now a 4-Issue mini-series. I simply could not keep the story contained to 3 issues and do all the characters and story arcs justice. I'm sure you'll approve of the results.

Want to Appear in an issue of Sidekicks?

Now's your chance!

We are running a very limited Kickstarter Campaign for Cameo Appearances ONLY.

Because of our deal with the Publisher, work on Sidekicks - Issue #2 needs to start soon. We know how much people like the Cameo Appearance Rewards and we wanted to make sure we provided an opportunity for people to get their likeness in the comic.

There are only two Reward Tiers:

1) Cameo Appearance: Your likeness will appear in the book. You might even have some dialogue.

2) Original Art & Cameo Appearance: Not only will your likeness appear in the book, but you will also receive the original page of penciled art that features your appearance.

ALL Backers of this Kickstarter will ALSO receive:

Physical copies of Issues #2-4 signed by Writer/Co-Creator Russell Brettholtz
Two 11x17 Posters
Advanced View PDFs (see the pages as they are completed)
The Behind the Scenes PDF (including character concept art, all all artwork from layouts to letters)
Your name included in the "Thank You" section of the comic book
A PDF copy of all four issues of the comics.

If you or someone you know wants to appear in Sidekicks, now's the time to act.

Many of these Cameo Appearances will NOT be available in the future.

Thank you.

A quick progress report:

Miguel has completed the pencil work on issue #1. As mentioned, he is on schedule to have the pages inked for next Monday. This should have the book complete for the end of the month.

And once completed, the PDF version will be available immediately to those of you who Backed the Kickstarter.

There are still slots available for Cameo Appearances in Issues #2-4, but TIME IS RUNNING OUT. Bong Dazo has finished the layouts for issue #2 and has begun penciling the book. There are only 6 days left to secure your spot in the book.

You can reserve a Cameo Appearance through the following Kickstarter link:https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1507558932/sidekicks-cameo-appearances-for-issues-2-4

And finally, just a little sneak peek at issue #2.

Another progress report.

The Inks are Done!

Miguel has finished inking all of the pages for Issue #1. They will be sent over to Sara for colors soon, and we will be that much closer to having a completed book.

As it stands, we have 23 penciled and inked pages, and 10 colored and lettered pages.

Not much else to report this week, so I'll leave you with another sneak peek of one of our villains from Issue #2.

A Progress Report and Thank You

Hey, everyone!

We're getting close!

Sara has been sending me one page per day. There are only 7 pages left to be colored and then they're off to HdE for lettering.

The end is near!

In Issue #2 news, Bong has finished the pencils for the entire issue and they have been sent to our new Inker. I'm saving his introduction for a future Update, but he has quite the impressive resume and we are very happy to have him on board.

Finally, please take a look at our "Thank You" page from Issue #1. A named Thank You in the book was one of the Reward options and I'm thrilled to share this page with ALL of our followers.

Thanks!

Hey, everyone!

Sara has finished coloring all of the pages for Issue #1. I've sent them off to HdE for lettering and then the book will be finished.

It's been a long time getting to this point and I thank you all for your continued patience. We hope to have the comic finished before year's end.

What better way to celebrate than with another sneak peek at one of the villains from Issue #2?

Hey, everyone!

Hope you're all enjoying a wonderful holiday season.

The book is almost done. We had some color revisions to make and my editor is taking a final look at the colors and the script before sending everything off to HdE for lettering. As you can imagine, the back-to-back-to-back holidays have slowed everything down a bit.

But, I'm ready to announce that Sidekicks will be published by Darby Pop Publishing (http://www.darbypop.com/).

"In early 2013, Jeff Kline founded Darby Pop Publishing in order to use the incredible visual medium of sequential art, better known as comic books, to tell new stories. Comic books presented a way for Jeff to tell interesting visually driven stories from a variety of genres in a way that fostered creation and collaboration unlike any other medium. So Jeff started talking to other writers, artists, and comic professionals to put together a talented team of creative minds to create a new line of comic books."

I am very excited to be working with Jeff Kline, Renae Geerlings, Joshua Cozine and the rest of the Darby Pop team.

In other news, I have received the pages of original artwork from Miguel. I hope to have them in the mail to those of you who Backed at the $150 and $300 levels this week.

Rick is still working on the Inks for issue #2, but Bong has been moving quickly and delivered the pencils for Issue #3 this past weekend.

I know it's been a long wait for Issue #1. I'm doing everything I can to not only get it to you as soon as possible, but to also have as much finished for the remainder of the series before I launch the next Kickstarter for Issues #2-4.

Thank you for all your support in this amazing year.

See you in 2015.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Hey, everyone!

As I mentioned in the last update, we had a final round of edits (colors and script) to make before we could have the pages lettered.

I am very happy to share that those edits have been made and the final pages and script have been sent to HdE for lettering.

I know we've been here before, but every revision and delay has been in service to providing you with the highest quality comic book we can produce.

Thank you, again, for your continued patience.

Please enjoy this sneak peek at yet another villain from Issue #2.

Rough Pencils - Page 8

(Day)

Thanks. I know. The page was approved before it was pointed out to me; and a simple "flip" won't fix it.

Good editing lesson, I suppose.

Actually this is a simple fix. You have the inker flip the entire image fix the flame emblem and only ink the two figures. Ink the background as is by finishing every building and element in the background then a simple paste over of the figures, voila colors, letters, print.

Hey, everyone!

The letters are done! I sent them off to my editor for one final lookover, but then they'll be off to the printer. I'll be spending this week (and maybe next) putting the pages together for the digital version.

The digital version will got out pretty much once it is compiled.

Almost there, folks!

Thank you for your continued support.

Hey, everyone!

You're reading this right. Sidekicks #1 is finally finished.

HdE sent me the lettered pages last week, and I spent all weekend getting the files ready for print as well as putting together the digital copy.

I have sent the Dropbox link to those Kickstarter Backers who pledged at a level with the Advance View, and so long as I don't hear back that the link doesn't work or the comic is incomplete, I'll be sending the link to the rest of the Backers on Friday.

I also sent the order for Sidekicks #1 to the printer today. I should be getting the proof shortly, and once approved I should have the printed copies within the next few weeks.

I'm currently working on the Behind the Scenes PDF, and hope to have that out to Backers next week.

As for the rest of the mini-series:

Issue #2 is completely penciled and is in the progress of being inked.

Issue #3 is completely penciled.

Issue #4 has completed rough pencils and is being edited before being sent back to Bong for completion.

I can't wait to get Sidekicks #1 in all of your hands. It's been a long year, but we finally made it.

That's it for this week.

In other news, I sent out the Behind the Scenes PDF over the weekend to those Backers who pledged at a level that included that Reward.

I hope you enjoyed it.

And finally, I hope you ALL enjoyed the digital copy of Sidekicks #1.

Just a little update:

The physical copies of Sidekicks #1 have been mailed out to our Kickstarter Backers. It feels really good to finally be getting this book into the hands of those who helped make its existence possible.

Bong Dazo is finished with the pencils for Issues #2-4, and the look AMAZING! I can't wait to start sharing some of those pages.

Rick Ketcham is hard at work inking Issue #2.

The only problem is, I'm out of money.

With the Rewards from the previous Kickstarter nearly all sent out, and running out of money to continue paying my art team, that means it's back to Kickstarter to raise the funding for Issues #2-4.

The current plan is to launch on Sunday, March 1, so keep your eyes on this thread for updates.

If you were a Backer, and have read the comic, please let me know your thoughts on Sidekicks #1. Loved it? Hated it? Forgot you even ordered a copy?

Shoot me a message here, or on our Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/sidekickscomics) page, or on Twitter (https://twitter.com/SidekicksComix).

I want to hear from you!

Thank you all, again, for joining me on this incredible journey. Thank you for your patience with all of the delays. Every delay was in an effort to provide you with the best possible comic.

Please let me know how we did.

Thanks, everyone.

Hey, everyone!

With just under 3 weeks left we're still tracking to have a successful campaign. But like every Kickstarter campaign, the middle tends to be a bit slower.

To try and keep the momentum going I've decided to throw a little contest.

If we can get the total Amount Pledged up to $6000 by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, March 22, I will give away one of the pages of Original Art from Sidekicks Issue #1!

This will be a random giveaway to anyone who is a Backer at the time the contest ends who has Pledged at a level of $15 or higher.

That person will be able to choose from one of the following 3 pages:
http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/SidekicksComics/Contest%20Image_zpspcleheok.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/SidekicksComics/media/Contest%20Image_zpspcleheok.jpg.html)

So if you or someone you know might be interested in supporting Sidekicks, this would be a perfect opportunity to get them to pledge.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1507558932/sidekicks-issues-2-4

And for convenience, you can click-to-tweet the following:

"Want to own Original Art from #Sidekicks? One lucky @kickstarter Backer will win if we reach $6k by 3/23." (http://ctt.ec/0t742)

Keep spreading the word, everyone. Let's get some lucky Backer a piece of Sidekicks!

Hey, everyone!

In the 24 hours since last night's "Call to Arms" we have added 15 new Backers who pledged $351, bringing our Total up to $5079. More than halfway to our Goal!

I wanted to take a moment to put a spotlight on a Reward Tier I expected to get more attention than it has, and to announce a change I made to it.

The $215 - Original Art reward tier has been closed.

I have replaced it with the $215 - Original Art and TPB reward (limited to 29):
http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/SidekicksComics/TPB%20Cover%20255_zpslnk5hou4.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/SidekicksComics/media/TPB%20Cover%20255_zpslnk5hou4.jpg.html)

"You will receive an original page of penciled art drawn by Bong Dazo from the comic. You will also receive a "1 of 30" signed and numbered Trade Paperback of Sidekicks #1-4. Plus both 11x17 posters, the Advanced View JPGs, the Behind the Scenes PDFs, physical copies of Sidekicks #2-4 signed by Writer/Co-Creator Russell Brettholtz, your name will be included in the "Thank You" section in Issue #4 and you will receive PDF copies of the comics."

As you can see, the big difference is that I added a very exclusive Trade Paperback to the reward. How exclusive? There will only be 30 copies printed. They will be signed (by Russell Brettholtz) and numbered (based on the order people pledge the reward). The cover will also have the Kickstarter Bug. This TPB will only be available to Backers of this campaign.

There are still 29 of these rewards available. Please take a minute to check out the Original Art Gallery (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/SidekicksComics/library/Sidekicks%20-%20Original%20Art%20Rewards) to see what pages are still available.

One page has already been sold (and that Backer will still receive the updated rewards):

Hey, everyone!

We hit 180 Backers! As promised, that means it's time to reveal the concept art for Atalanta; another one of the Heroes in Sidekicks.

Enjoy!

Atalanta Concept Art by Jeff Bonesteel

Issue #2, Page 19 - Pencils by Bong Dazo

(the above page of Original Art is available for purchase as part of the $165 - Original Art and TPB Reward Tier)

Nikki always knew she was special. Her mother told her so. Growing up she was always a little bit stronger, a little bit faster, a little bit BETTER than her peers. When she turned 13 her mother finally explained why.

She was the direct descendant of an actual Greek Goddess: Atalanta.

As legend has it, Atalanta was a great hunter and warrior. But she drew her strength from her chastity. So when Atalanta finally fell in love and consummated the relationship, she was cursed by Artemis (to whom she had plead her fealty) to live out the rest of her days on Earth among the humans. However, this did not stop Atalanta from continuing to live the life of a warrior, nor from raising the daughter born of her failed love.

And for every generation thereafter, the first born daughter (born with a portion of the power of the original goddess) inherited the mantle of Atalanta, and sworn to protect those who needed her most.

And so did Nikki inherit the mantle from her mother (along with a pair of really awesome swords).

Genuinely kind and honest, she lives with a secret. That while she must find a suitable companion with whom to conceive the next Atalanta; a companion whom she needs to truly love; she will forfeit her power to that daughter. And giving up that power is not something Nikki has any inclination to do.

The next character's concept art will be unlocked at 190 Backers.

Just want to say that you may want to be careful about the title and the story you give to your comic. You probably do not know this but there was a Sidekick comic book in 2006 with the exact same premise...

I had never hear of that book before.

But based on the write up, my story seems quite a bit different.

Thank you for pointing that out, but I'm not terribly concerned.

Just under 7 hours left and we just hit $7000! But we still have $3000 to go!

It's anybody's guess as to whether or not we make it, but if you haven't pledged yet, you are nearly OUT OF TIME!

Get on over to Kickstarter and Back this project ASAP!

Thanks, everyone.

Hey, everyone!

While, of course, I am disappointed that we didn't hit out Funding Goal of $10,000, 217 people came together to Pledge $7,450 towards the completion of Sidekicks. And while that may not be a success, I still consider it to be a great accomplishment.

But I haven't given up hope.

I am well aware of the mistakes I made during this campaign, and I plan to learn from them and correct them in a future campaign.

Toward that end, I appreciate any and all feedback that you might have for me.

I believe my biggest mistake was not having a pledge tier that offered a physical copy of Issue #1. After 30 days, I really can't remember what made me think that I didn't need to go back and do a second printing of the first issue.

I also know a lot of people were interested in a Trade Paperback. I will be running the numbers to see if I can create a good reward tier that includes a TPB.

The current plan is to relaunch on Tuesday April 14, at 8:00 PM EST.

Launching a campaign with a huge surge is always a good indicator for success.

So, during the new campaign, ALL Backers who pledge during the first 28 hours (by Wednesday April 15, 11:59 PM EST), regardless of Pledge Level, will have their names included in the "First Day Backers" section of the "Thank You" page at the end of Issue #4.

Thank you, again, everyone. Running a Kickstarter campaign is always an amazing experience, not the least of which is the interaction I get to have with all of you.

Stay tuned for more Sidekicks information.

Hey, everyone!

Just a quick reminder that we're relaunching the Kickstarter campaign to finish Sidekicks tomorrow at 12:00 PM EST.

As I've mentioned, a HUGE surge out of the gate is always important. So, ALL Backers who pledge during the first 36 hours (by Wednesday April 15, 11:59 PM EST), regardless of Pledge Level, will have their names included in the "First Day Backers" section of the "Thank You" page at the end of Issue #4.

I fixed some problem that plagued as in the original campaign, added several new "Catch-Up" tiers, including physical copies of Issue #1 as well as a Trade Paperback.

I'm feeling really good about the new campaign, and I know that with your help we can reach our $10,000 goal.

Thanks, everyone! Don't forget to pledge tomorrow.

Can't wait until tomorrow to check out the new campaign?

Hey, everyone!

Following is the Poster #2 Reward from the Sidekicks Kickstarter Campaign (which you can support at this link: http://kck.st/1aOY2vT).

I absolutely LOVE this picture. Many thanks to Jeff Bonesteel for designing all of the characters, Bong Dazo for adding his own touches to the pencils, and Sara Machajewski who gave them all a tweak when she added the colors.

The Kickstarter campaign is going great!

With 18 days left we are 76% of the way toward our funding goal of $10,000.

Now would be a great time to jump on board if you haven't already done so.

Thanks!

Hey, everyone!

With 10 days to go we are over 80% of the way to our goal. Only $1934 to go!

Keep spreading the word!

I just wanted to give a little update on how the artwork is coming along for Issues #2-4.

Issue #2 is completely penciled with 10 pages inked.

Issue #3 is penciled, inked and colored.

Issue #4 is penciled with 15 pages inked and 2 pages colored.

You might notice that Issues #3 and #4 are moving along faster than Issue #2. I am very sad to share that our Issue #2 inker, Rick Ketcham, passed away last month. We were all very shocked by the news. To keep Sidekicks on schedule, Glauber Matos (who is inking Issues #3 and #4) has agreed to finish Issue #2.

And don't forget, the concept art for the villain sidekicks, Boost, will be revealed when we reach 220 Backers.

Hey, everyone!

We're into the final week and closing in on our goal of $10,000.

With only 4 days left we only need $1564 to fund the campaign! If you know someone you think would enjoy Sidekicks, NOW would be the time to share the link with them.

One of our current Backers made a request for a way to get the 12-page Bonus comic, The Super-Hero's Nightmare (written by Russell Brettholtz with art by Peter Sefcik), that was included with the digital copy of Sidekicks in the original campaign last year.

So for any one who would like to receive The Super-Hero's Nightmare, you can increase your pledge by $1 and it will be sent out immediately following the successful completion of this campaign.

I do want to point out that the Bonus story is in no way related to the Sidekicks mini-series, characters, or world (BUT it is a fun read).

And I know I said I wasn't going to release the Boost concept art until we reached 220 Backers, but it's taking a bit longer to get there than I had hoped, so I figured, what the heck.

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o660/SidekicksComics/Pre-Design/Boost%20-%20Colors_zpssxqpu0vb.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/SidekicksComics/media/Pre-Design/Boost%20-%20Colors_zpssxqpu0vb.jpg.html)

Boost is the sidekick to the villain, Quarrel. She can "boost" the power level of any super-powered people that are near her.

And just a reminder that all of the villains (including their sidekicks) were designed by Jeff Bonesteel. You can "add-on" an 11x17 full color commission by Jeff for $100 or pledge at the $150 - Bonesteel Art Commission Tier to have Jeff draw any character, just for you.

Almost there, folks. Keep spreading the word!

Hey, everyone!

Less than 24 hours to go and we are so close!

We only need $333 to reach our funding goal. I know we can do it!

Just a few quick reminders before the final hours tick by.

There are still 9 Issue #1 First Print copies available. These have the Kickstarter Bug on the front cover which the second print copies will not. If you are already pledged to a tier which rewards a second print, simply increase your pledge by $5 to upgrade to a first print. First come, first served.

Also, we still have many incredible pages of Original Artwork by Issue #2-4 penciler, Bong Dazo. Be sure to check out the available pages here: http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/SidekicksComics/library/Sidekicks%20-%20Original%20Art%20Rewards

Finally, if commissioned art interests you, consider getting your own piece done by our character designer, Jeff Bonesteel. You can get an 11x17 full color commission of any character you want (even beyond Sidekicks characters). Take a look at his portfolio here: http://jbonesteel.deviantart.com/gallery/

It's been an amazing ride. Let's finish strong!

HUGE Update from Sidekicks

Hey, everyone!

For those of you who Backed the Issue #1 Kickstarter last year, this news may not come as a total surprise, but Sidekicks has been picked up by Darby Pop Publishing.
Darby Pop just ended a 2-year relationship with IDW and have joined forces with Magnetic Press.

http://icv2.com/articles/news/view/32094/magnetic-attracts-darby-pop

Side-Kicked will be the first release from Darby Pop under this new arrangement.

So, what does this mean for you, the ground-floor, Kickstarter Backers?

For starters, you may notice the title change. The Powers That Be at Darby Pop were concerned about confusion between Sidekicks and Sidekick (by JMS) and felt a little tweak was in order. BUT, ALL Kickstarter Rewards will still use the original Sidekicks name.

Also, Darby Pop is only publishing a trade paperback, so those of you getting the single issues will have a truly rare printing (and the KS edition of the TPB will feature the original Sidekicks name, have the KS Bug on the cover, will include the Thank You page, and will be signed by me - which I know is what gives it its real value).

Even the digital copies of the series will be exclusive since each issue comes with bonus content featuring the concept art for the heroes, villains, and villain sidekicks, along with their back stories.

You will also all get to read the back stories for the five main sidekicks featured in the comic by way of "Backer Only" Updates (condensed versions will appear in the Darby Pop TPB, but you will get a much fuller picture with what's posted here).

The entire creative team is very exited about Sidekicks being taken to the next level, and we can not thank you enough for helping us get there (seriously, none of this would have been possible without your support).

Finally, ALL four issues are FINISHED!

We're in the final stages of getting the book sized, and then it's off to the printers.

I will keep everyone informed as the Rewards get mailed out (and if you haven't responded to the Survey yet, NOW IS THE TIME - also please update your mailing address if you recently moved).

That's it for now. Thanks, everyone!

Newsarama's Best Shots Team reviewed SIDE-KICKED #1. Here's what they had to say:

"The superhero genre has been remixed, rebooted, deconstructed and spun-off so many times over the decades that every few years we begin to wonder how far the elastic can stretch before it snaps back on itself. Just last year, J. Michael Straczynski took a darkly comic look at the long-suffering second stringers in Sidekick, while Marvel flipped the script on henchmen only a month ago in Hank Johnson, Agent of HYDRA. Yet writer Russell Brettholtz aims to show there is still some life left in labor law, with a fun twist that might result in the unionizing of sidekicks."
