View Full Version : "What are you working on?" part II

This is a old thread that dates back to two years ago that I bring back here.

I for myself discovered DW by mistake last summer while searching the keywords "comic book" and "submission", if I remember well. Since then, I got the chance to be critiqued by pros who hang around the forums (big thanks to Ron Fortier). From these critiques, I have been able to improve my art by working on what was lacking and I became a lot, LOT better as an artist (my stuff is far from perfect, but there is no doubt in my mind that I improved significantly).

Now, I am working on my first assignment, a two-parts, sixteen-pager for Midnight Studio. The deadline is april 20th, which is why my fingers are bleeding (hey, they ARE!).

Somehow, I feel like I owe one big hug to the guy who's behind this site...

So, what's YOUR story? And what are your working on right now?

Hi

I'm currently writing and illustrating a series called Lunatic Fringe for 01 Comics. Issue #1 is in print and I'm drawing issue #4 now. If you like weird X-files type stuff check it out at www.01comics.com or www.highanxietystudios.com

I'm eating a hot dog with ketchup and horse raddish.

On the comic front, I'm working on advertising for our new book during this con season. Trade show designs, website stuff and print ads.

I'm currently proof the third printing of Ill Conceived and our media packets for Philly and San Diego.

I'll be getting back to 'Is Polly There' soon as well as possibly starting on a new 'Top Secret (no, not the movie)' graphic novel, yet to be announced or titled..

I just finished drawing (pencils and inks on all) page 85 of my original graphic novel called Devoid of Life (science-fiction/horror). It's currently submitted back to Image. Erik approved my art but wanted the plot and script for the submission improved and clarified better before (if?) he gives it the greenlight.
It's been a month now -hopefully I'll hear back soon -in any case the book looks great and I'll find another publisher if they pass.

- Playing with the fine folks over at http://www.uggabugga.net on the webcominc Awesome Storm Justice 41. Webisode 9, which is my first contribution (editing and lettering) comes out next week, and I have 6 installments I've written (one for the main series, one for an offshoot mini-series, which kicks off in June).

- Writing for another webcomic that's in development, but I don't know what all I'm allowed to say about it at this point.

- Writing/Lettering for a couple projects with David Newbold, who had some nice samples of one of the two projects in the sequential showcase awhile back.

- Just finished writing five new comic shorts for Lizzie Six-Gun, who will be a regularly appearing character in Horizons over the next year.

- Just finished lettering Mr. Granger's Family Bones #1 (King Tractor Press), and signed on to letter Lethal Instinct, Volume 2 (Alias/Lynx Studios).

- Gearing up to start plotting a couple of my own creations here in the next month or so, and wondering why I never have time for them...

Pencilling/inking a 12-pager for LJamal´s Warmageddon and attending the Comic Book Idol contest with Ljamal and Mike Imboden.

Hopefully start collaborating with Kel Nuttal on a Trailer Park of Terror short. I´m itching to do this!

Other than comics: 8 humor postcards, my concept, ideas and execution. I should also start working on a humourous horoscope postcard series sometime this summer.

In the future: I have ideas for two separate comic books, which I would write and illustrate. Maybe I´ll submit them by the end of the year. :whistlin:

Good god man I haven't seen you since the Yahoo Groups. Freaking awesome work!

Me, I'm just inking... I'm working on Victoria's Secret Service #2-5 for Blue Water Productions. I inked most of 10th Muse #10 back in February. I'm inking a couple shorts as well in between VSS pages.

I'm also managing 2 artists and hoping to add 1 or 2 more to rep before SDCC 2006. While I'm doing that I'm learning HOW to be a rep... I kind of ended up becoming one by accident. It's fun though :D

And I'm trying to figure out how to build my website.... It's coming along. Eventually. Someday. ;_;

And I'm currently adjusting to a night shift job.... which is why I'm wide awake when it's almost 5am here.*sigh*

Oh and I sometimes sleep. Sometimes.

Having never actually put anything of substance up on this site, I'm a little wary to join this thread. Despite that, I'll just say that I'm working on what I hope becomes my first finished project.

After working with an artist who, to be blunt, is the least reliable person I've EVER met, in my ENTIRE life- he took 6 months to do a 10 page promo, didn't even FINISH the promo, got it to me too late to print (so we had to put it on CDs) and then just quit working on the book without actually letting me know- I'm really nervous about this whole process. Even still, I'm trying to finish the script and will be looking for an artist soon, so hopefully it'll go somewhere.

Oh, and this is off topic, but I have to say that I'm really inspired by pretty much everyone on this site. So much talent abounds, but more importantly I have seen a LOT of people being supportive and helping each other out. It gives hope, especially after my problem (mentioned above), and it's part of the reason I haven't quit. So thanks.

No offense, but isn't there an issue of credibility with those pieces? Somethingabout using photshop filters?

Just finished inking something that should've been completed a year ago...before that I finished my second and last story for TLC. The format isn't so great. I had to cut stuff out that should have stayed in. The result is a less enriching experience for the reader ...still waiting for the results of my revision... Turning the heat up on my next two stories for IU, one of them is sci-fi with a bit of western...(a little topical but not contemporary) and one of them is a "modern war story". And i'm chipping away at painting this cover for TLC..it's a collabo with this artist (http://www.tegnebordet.dk/index.php?vis=brugergalleri.php&id=615&visning=newest)

I'm working on a four-part miniseries titled Descartes the Zombie with the uber-talented Wayne Nichols. We're in the process of putting together ten or so pages to submit to a major publisher later this year (hopefully, by late summer).

We've got a little production blog getting ramped up at IntelligentZombie.com (http://intelligentzombie.com) , where we'll be posting previews and whatnot as things progress. There are three penciled pages there now along with some concept art and an early take on the final colored look (Wayne's doing the art straight through from pencils to colors, with digital inks).

I've also got pitches in for two exciting anthology projects: a romance comic anthology from Platinum Studios, and Jason Rodriguez's Postcards anthology.

Next up, in addition to the ongoing work on the Descartes the Zombie submission, I want to submit a little something for Trailer Park of Terror.

Just finished up my first 4 issue mini series published at www.01comics.com called "Zero Hunters". "The Last Warring Angel" is also going to be published by the same publisher, starting soon. I'm busy working on a six issue mini called "ONE" and you can see the first 12 pages at www.cinemacomics.com. In addition to that I'm working on a 4 issue mini but it's a little too early to talk about that one. The first issue is nearly penciled and pages will be posted at Cinemacomics shortly. I've also just completed digital inking on the first issue of Bureau 13 at www.pixelstrips.com. I'll also be starting on the production of Zero Hunters 2 in a few weeks.

Well I'm EXTREMELY proud to say I'm working on two projects - one a visual history of the Canadian Horse involving a little 17th century research, I haven't been told yet where it would be going, and the second is a collaboration with someone from here!! I've promised to keep my lips zipped, and girls are famous for zipped lips (say that 5 times fast) but if things go well (if I don't screw up) it should come out in January. I'm sooooo happy! I'm working on a story called OGRE.

http://myspace-776.vo.llnwd.net/01075/67/71/1075241776_l.jpg

the story is an allegory for the way many americans treated middle eastern people after 9/11. Grigoriy, the Ogre is constantly mistaken for a MONSTER(or Terrorist) and often assumed as a Troll(an all together different species with different history, different religion, politics and so forth) because of the way he looks and the ignorance the world of him has about other cultures.

its based partly on something that happened to a friend of mines father and partly on something that happened to a girl at work.

Mostly its just a sad story about an Ogre who fails at making his wifes life what he promised an gets drunk in a bar and regrets everything he's ever done.

http://img420.imageshack.us/img420/318/promotr5nr.jpg

If you hear from me again, I'll try to have some of my art stuff up.

OK, so Archeo-Ethics is out now. I felt my voice was dampened by the editing but whatever. Now.....I'm drawing a comic for someone. It's a teen drama with supernatural overtones. Kind of like a EB TV show. I've been sluggish on it but lately I've been mapping it out. It's been a while since I've worked regularly on drawing a comic.
That painting collabo is the most labored thing I've ever worked on. Taking forever
I have this prose thing in the pipeline with someone here...we'll see and I want to spend later this year working on writing a manga comic series...
Something done completely by computer below art.

That looks like something I'd be into. You got a publisher for it?

Me, well I can now reveal that I've been artyfying one of the many stories in Image's upcoming Popgun anthology. Yes, in my bean style. Well, partially, anyway. I think I've got permission to show a preview, but I'll make sure first. Been busting to tell about this for months!

Other than that, I've got a couple of projects on the go, one of which has gathered a lot of interest already (but I can't reveal! Nuts!)

Damn Mic Gee, that type font your using is hellishly irritating to read... didnt bother to read 2nd post cuz my eyes are bleeding from first heh... super tired so Im just skimming thru thread atm anyways...

Im working on a Proposal with a writer friend of mine (for Marvel) crazy good script, hopefully my art will match :D Were both kinda doing the writing and the art, while hes the final guy on writing and Im the final guy on the art, but it nice having someone to bounce ideas off of and vice versa.

Yah I know Marvel more then likely isnt taking proposal ideas, but Imma submit it to the contest theyre running for artists and hopefully be able to drag along a writer if I somehow manage to win one of the spots :P

p.s. all the art Ive posted is really old, I cant wait to post someshit from within the last few years...

He joins a religion that is very evangellical and wants to bring her into the fold and she just wants to follow her new crush around and learn what she can about religion from her.

I first came here when I was a sophomore in high school, and I was under the handle "specter' and I spent a whole summer on here bsing in chit-chat (pretty much. lol)
I heard about it thru a friend at my dad's work who knew i liked comics and thought this would be agood place for me to get good feedback (...i think that's how i found it... I can't really remember)

Now i'm in college, and just got back on the site last year. I am in college and I'm an art student. (Painting/printmaking dual major, art history minor) and I still love comic books.

Right now I'm working on trying to graduate, random comics (I should make a webcomic someday i think. it'd be fun) and soon might be contrubiting to a photo-based webcomic that has changed it's format to art. (http://www.hilarityensuespdx.com/index.php , if you're wondering, but it's not up now, and it won't be for a while... )

Other than that i'm just up to trying to stay out of too much trouble and trying to make it thru college.

It's these kind of production values I'm afraid is what will drive prices up even further.

The computer is making everything possible and people are doing a ton of superrealism. I ust don't see it going anywhere since it ends up being fodder for cgi.

What the hell. I'm probably just pissed I haven't done a painted comic yet.

John Rauch
10-08-2007, 11:24 AM
I'm not really sure what to say to that. This style does take me quite a bit of time, but it's not SO bad. Lately, I've been averaging around 14 hours on a page, from start to finish. There are times I regret starting the book in a style so detailed, but I think it fits the story and that's most important. If I were drawing some other book, it would probably be in a different style.

Newt

I think by 'production values' he means the cost of printing.

John Rauch
10-08-2007, 11:59 AM
I doubt that. Painted work doesn't cost any more to print than regular colored pages.

Newt
10-08-2007, 12:04 PM
Yeah, but all modern colored comics have pretty high production values and printing costs compared to the comics of the Golden Age, or many modern B&W indy comics.

Maybe I'm just missing his point, but I thought that's what he was getting at: that comics might be cheaper if they were still printed on newsprint in four colors.

Comics are still printed in four colors and newsprint hasn't been used for a long time now, so my pages wouldn't have any bearing on that.

and why shouldn't they? it's obvious there's a market for comics both mainstream and indy that have higher production values, and people seem willing to pay for that especially in the graphic novel format, so i say give it to em. i think these pages look great. moving back to newsprint is going backwards rather than advancing. cheaper does not always mean better.

Right now I'm working on a couple projects...

A trade of Innocent Volume 1 that collects a year of webcomics plus about 60 pages of new stuff. It's got a Tony De Zuniga cover and will be in Nov. Previews.

Then the Family Bones Volume 1 is coming out after that, should be Jan. Previews. This collects the series issues 1 - 5.

Both of those will be hitting bookstores soon after the Diamond sales.

Then I've got Mr. Phelps, but we're stalled with the grayscaling right now. Strangely that's given us some time to really detail the pencils & inks, but I hope to have that going asap. It's a great series.

And then I've got two series, Gene Gardens and Grey Shades that I'm trying to negotiate with a new publisher. We'll see what they say. I've got first issues of both done and should be done with #2 asap.
