Please don't think I'm dumb, but I have started working on a book, and have been told it'll be an ashcan. With my other illustration jobs, I use ashcans when I sharpen my pencils. What is an ashcan?

It's a smaller more pocket sized format. I think final sizes vary but it's around 4"x6". Give or take. Might want to keep that in mind when you do the final art work everything will be shot down smaller than regular comic size.

An ashcan is a disposable preview comic.

yeah, basically it's just a b&w mini-comic, printed on 8 1/2 x 11" paper, photocopies and used like a demo tape.

They are often in color and professionally printed.

The proportions also always remain the same.

Back in the late 80's early 90's ashcans were printed like 4x6 or aorund there. And as Bucky said were at times professionally printed and or colored. Is this not done anymore? Am I showing my age? You young whipper-snappers now a days! By cracky! :)

Some of the nice preview ashcans were also VERY collectable in the 90s.

And hey, there ain't nothing wrong with mini-comics!

In fact I've seen commercials on... Nikelodean I believe, for the new Marvel collectable mini comics...they come with their own magnifying glass.
