Yeah guys-- you all know me and how skeptical and criticical I can be.... and I dont know how much I can say until I talk with Platinum because I did sign contracts-- but I can honestly tell you with NO butt kissing at all, that the Platinum people are some of the nicest mothercrunkers I've EVER met in comics. And they really worked hard for this, it wasnt some cracker jack operation, they pulled out all the stops and put on a good show.

I think any DW member there would agree. I was really impressed and now I'm really floored that I won.

Congrats DJ. Be sure to give us all a rundown on how they work and stuff, if you can (I know a lot of people use NDAs now). I really want to know (and I am sure other people do also) if this all is on the up-n-up, if you know what mean, or if they make you sign away most of your rights for little in return (besides the publicity which I am sure you are more concerned with).

-SIN-
GATOR

I spoke with Platinum myself, and they are honest about the fact that you do sign away all the rights. They are buying the property, not optioning it. I think in DJ's case, the publicity and whatever pay they agree on is well worth it. He's not a one-trick pony so he'll be fine. This is an up-n-up contract, but it's a buy. There are better contracts, but I've seen worse. I think DJ is going to be fine...better than fine even. :carrot:

Question: Was a majority of the people writer/artists or were there whole teams or writers without their artists and visa-versa?

And did anyone have the heart to tell the Six Sins guy that there are seven deadly sins?

I really hope it is the best, really, but you know the saying, "you attract more flies with honey than vinegar". Their comic optioning has already proving not to be on the up-n-up (well actually they never lie just take advantage of people) so that makes me (and I am sure others) a little weary, that is why, I bet, a lot of people didn't try (plus this was extremely rushed). However, by putting on a good show, they might get more people to try next time (even if this proves to be a bad deal). Then again, it might be all good (which I hope is true for your sake). However, I feel for them if it is not cause I know you spit venom worst than anyone.

I really hope it is the best, really, but...
DJ's been around long enough not to go into this blindly. As someone else pointed out, he's NOT a one-trick pony. He's not signing away his only idea or his baby. If anything, he can use this wonderful opportunity to strengthen all of his other ideas and get some notice.

Way to go DJ!!! Awesome pitch. Congratulations!

Listen, I'm not going to just defend Platinum because I won... I actually ASKED questions. I can't devulge anything right now about MY contract, but it is a little different than the others but similar.... but c'mon.. that contract is sweet deal! I don't lose creator credit, i think I'm safe to say because it's publically on their website, but they pay me to draw the books, and sweet royalties I can't mention.

Just because you haven't seen a Platinum Comic book YET, means nothing. These guys have some HUGE things going on. Huger than I ever thought.

I can understand being a creator of something, giving them the first look rights or something to pitch to hollywood and then it never sells and you get bitter waiting around and maybe talk behind their back. But the bottom line is, not EVERYTHING sells in Hollywood, and then the Not everything sells for the same reason in Hollywood. It took them what? 3 years or so to sell Men in Black and no one wanted that.

Believe me-- these guys are for real-- I have the super power to see through bullshit. Again-- as I said before, if anyone has any HARD FACTS of people who were screwed over or complained publicaly about Platinum, BRING IT TO ME. Let's see it. Otherwise shut it up, cause I'm shuttin you down. ;)

And hey, I dont want to come off as reaming anyone here for being critical. I'm the most critical and jaded honest guy you could know---

I'll tell you, if Platinum lets me, I'll totally make HERO BY NIGHT their Batman or Spiderman and bring it all back old school for new generations of comic fans. That's my secret goal with all of this. Screw all the old jaded people, they can buy and be critical, but it'll be the KIDS that will make this thing giant I think. I can see it in my own kids eyes.

(and theyre not just kissing my butt because I'm their dad, believe me!)

From Comic Book Resources:

In the end, a winner finally emerged, namely, "DJ Coffman, a webcomic creator from Pittsburgh, PA with his idea entitled 'Hero By Night,'" revealed Forcey. The book focuses on a man named Jack King, who is faced with a world of tough decisions after he discovers the secret base of an old superhero is located in his new apartment! Said Forcey of Coffman, "He had a really strong idea, accompanied by very strong art. His idea will be premiering in print at a major comics convention next year. He's received a contract to write and draw the idea for Platinum, he's received an acquisition agreement from Platinum and a development deal for film and television."

The rest here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=8050

Congrats, again!
