HA... I'm already doing that for myself. you've seen it. I have all kinds of short stories that I keep thinking that when I get this put out there, and continue on...I might need artistic help... and I would LOVE to have you do something with me. this is a ways off either way and ..hey...I can dream right?

I don't know if there is other conversations going on about this project that I haven't seen.. but the last bit that I heard that sounded like a good idea was the project being done using PUBLIC DOMAIN characters.. which we could then in turn alter up to be more interesting if we so chose to.

the reason for this was that...with the HELLBOY project, it came out so good and so many people put together such great work, we talked about how great it would be to be able to print the book up and have copies. but obviously that's not an option with that one. but with Public Domain..if we end up putting together another really GOOD book like the Hellboy one.. we can print copies. maybe we could crowd fund a kickstarter and put copies into the hands of people that are interested. it just give us more options without the looming threat of legal action from using owned characters.

just a thought....

There is no other conversation. I just put up a poll. Polls are fun.

No, there is another conversation, the one about public domain characters. That idea is solid, so much that I'd steal it for myself if I were evil.

Iím SO glad youíre NOT Evil Ed (FRIGHT NIGHT fans, notice what I did there!), and I would be totally honored to work with you on the Public Domain theme. Heck, that might even be a great title for the anthology: ďPUBLIC DOMAIN: TALES OF THE FORGOTTEN.Ē

Is there a listing / description site for public domain characters?

This site

http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Pulp_Characters

lists quite a few of them and even provides some pretty good descriptions/backgrounds for the various characters. Iím sure, with the interweb, there are likely other places with even more info.

I love the Public Domain idea. I really want someone to do a Diamond Dick story. But, only because the teenager in me laughs overtime I see that name.

I was looking at the Domino Lady one, but it seems that someone published some Domino Lady comics back in 2009, does that still make her public domain? Or does the publisher have rights to her now that its a recent publication?

jeffchris50 06-28-2018 02:28 PM

Whichever characters we choose to use would require a bit of digging just to ensure that no one has a current copyright claim on them, but there are LOTS of them out that that I'm sure are free and clear. I think it would be a great way to bring some of these super obscure characters back into the public (or at least the comics-reading public) eye. There's a LOT of material there to be mined. As an added bonus, if you have an original pulpy character of your own, they could easily be brought into the mix, as well, IMHO.

P.S. Domino Lady was a character I was and am looking into, as well. Seems like she could definitely use an update....

TimR needs to do a Diamond Dick story! Pronto!

Scribbly 06-28-2018 04:10 PM

Public domain characters. That's the way to go

if we choose public domain characters, I think the best way is to let anyone/everyone choose whichever character they want, and redesign it to the way they want to make it look. something that is similar enough to what the original character is, but with your own modern spin.

lots of those characters are boring and silly as they were. but if we let everyone modernize them...that could make for some interesting stuff. its the only way this concept is interesting to me.

what the story structure would be..thats still up in the air.. I had an idea where instead of the characters are being bounced around to different places, like Hellboy was... this time something else is coming TO them. like the bad guy or whatever concept we come up with...its something that travels around and finds the characters we are using.

what about some kind of INVASION-ish type idea, where whatever antagonist is popping up all over the world and that's how the characters...good or bad, end up interacting with them. fighting them.

I had an idea of something that could even sorta link it to the site here...to DW. robot spiders??? they could transform or whatever into humanoid shapes...like a robot girl(cause robot girl=sexy) or anything else.. but ...invading robot spiders? (like the digital webbing logo)

that's just an idea I thought of.. something that would be a universal threat for all the characters to interact with.. everyone can reinterpret their public domain character to whatever they want... and have them all fight a common monster threat...

just spit ballin ideas here.

I know everyone has their own ideas of what would be fun and work. I'm just looking at this in the context of something that gives everyone the possibility of having a lot of free reign to do what they want, but have it LINKED together with all the other stories..(hence the same designed villians. robot spider. or whatever).

if we don't have a linked THEME...which we don't HAVE to... then it just becomes a bunch of random stories with no connection. and that could be fine if that's what people chose to do.

I just like the idea of a group project with a similar linked theme.

characters I was looking at... there was a "Captain Future". some lady named "Fantomah"(I think) whose face turns to a skull when she dispenses justice
there was some artic amazon lady..very WW like..
there was a bunch of Satan themed guys.. some gal. that looked interesting.

but seriously...imagine a bunch of heroes fighting an invading horde of alien robot spiders from the future(or whatever) that can turn into sexy robot ladies and/or dudes...

anyway...enough rambling...
guys...lets start deciding on ideas and see if we can agree on a concept. this will be a great practice run/ lead up to what Ed's doing with DWPv3. lets show him what we can do. ( tho we kinda did with Hellboy. but still)
