At times your female figures are a little bit TOO muscular. However I have to say the looseness of your figures is really really good. They look extremely natural in their poses for the most part.

@vandal thanks for the comments...yeah im trying to keep the poses loose. and good eye, i struggle with putting too much muscle on the figures sometimes ^^;...trying to go with some leaner forms in the near future.

love those floppy, saggy hilarious titties.. ^^/
it is a most unusual style though. The muscles work I think in terms of *drawing*, it's just not the usual approach to this sort of thing. Which is good as far as I'm concerned, I like novel approaches. The other thing that jumps out is how you draw wrists and ankles so thin in proportion to their bodies. Not saying it's bad necessarily. Just something one notices. I love seeing all those blue construction lines. Makes me want to go back and review some art instruction books to really get those back muscles and things down. Do you have any recommendations for study? |
@tim r thanks for the comments and floppy tits ftw  . to the wrists and ankles...^^; something of an issue that i'm trying to work through-gradual process. as i told a friend on ten ton board i don't think they will ever be john(much less sal ) buscema thick but they will get thicker.
to anatomy books-i don't use them :D. i think neal adams has it about right when he says practice from photographs and bodybuilding magazines-i just practice from photos then start with a blank page and hope for the best . a few more :carrot: level 1 thief detecting traps ^^; http://s19.postimage.org/fgtx1vbtf/l..._trapsblog.jpg gorilla man and namorita from agents of atlas http://s19.postimage.org/9vs7t6tub/a...moritablog.jpg not sure if male nudity is permitted  but here's male orc chef http://s19.postimage.org/5bhm5oqkz/o...ittish_pot.jpg my oc the horseshoe kid http://s19.postimage.org/aquxke7ir/h...a_revolver.jpg |

thanks for answering. To me it seems like it helps to really know the form of some of the underlying bones/muscles directly - using photos, it's like looking through frosted glass or something, it takes a while to figure out what the underlying shapes actually are, and even then you're not entirely sure. There's a reason Renaissance artists were cutting up corpses, you know!
But yeah, if it's good enough for Neal Adams, I don't blame you. And then too, I kind of like Erik Larsen's approach (as I recall) where at some point you just create your own "comic book anatomy" and do whatever works. Kirby certainly did that (although I think his early work showed he knew proper anatomy too.) |
@timr yeah you know there are so many ways to go about it...i have just found books to be extremely limiting-not to mention i find(and this isn't always true) that it tends to stiffen the figures(grids/boxes/etc...)...almost makes the figures too formulaic.
but using photos is tough...for the reasons you noted-and also frankly a picture can lie, what one sees might not actually be real. it's easier to get distortion on a picture and plus its just hard to find a bunch of hi resolution pics to practice from :D. how i do it is i practice from photos then draw from my head...its tough-but in fairness anatomy is just plain hard to master(no matter how you approach learning it). i keep practicing away-the frustrating part is the gradual nature of it...i very rarely have any sorts of big 'leaps' forward, more like a monthly improvement. and a few more pics :D goblin queen with goblin henchmen http://s6.postimage.org/zeuv4m441/go...hrone_blog.jpg clawdeen , of he-man fame is a zombie :D http://s6.postimage.org/4w52jnexd/cl...zombieblog.jpg evil-lyn costume redesigns http://s6.postimage.org/h9hwqk4lt/ev...designblog.jpg http://s6.postimage.org/o8vypx4k1/ev...ditionblog.jpg spiderwoman ...ready for battle http://s6.postimage.org/ub3lget01/sp...bewareblog.jpg |

To me you have great drawing skills...
I think most of your female sketches look like they are older(age)...... I think less muscle would help create a younger look. Maybe, less detail(At the door(at DW) in registration you have to be at least 13) meaning, let's not make the art xxx! Just an opinion... peace JAM,.............................................. ........ www.wggraphix.com |
I have looked at this thread a couple of times now.
Your artwork is starting to grow on me. Great flowing linework and the anatomy feels natural, even though it's very over the top. However, most of your females have basically the same overall appearance, so without your names, I wouldn't have picked who half the characters were. Abit more variety in your bodies, proportions and faces would go along way. |
