My progress Since October...
These are all the pieces I've colored since sometime in October roughly in the order I did them... please tell me what you think and any areas that I can improve on.

Really good progress here in such a short time you did these pieces. I'm sure you're still improving and will take there soon.
Here's my two cents: As I can see on the work, some of them are not finish yet and only flats so that can also be improved and cleaned up. Source of lighting is very important. You have to imagine or if you can see the movement of the scenes, you can add your shadows as required and will identify the mood. In some of the pinup/cover pieces I can see them, but on the sequential pieces, it lacks that. You're almost there, just a few more practice! ![]()

Thanks for the comments ^.^
Here's more that I've done since... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And this is the 1st page of my project - Crushing Utopia, finished last night. I am horrible at almost every element in this image... The sky of the first panel I didn't do. I took that from someone else that colored the page, but I have to redo it cuz style clash and that was the only thing I could save from his coloring. ![]() |

Colour theory.... as in use less black. Many times shadows are the opposite colour. Eg if your skin tones are a warm, yellow type colour, shadow will probably have a purple tint.
If you piece has a overall warm tone (so red), shadows will be a blue colour. Pure black shadows don't exist in real life. Hard edges and soft edges. Sometimes shadows are sharp and well defined, sometimes soft and hazy. Don't use the airbrush tool for all your shadows. AND...On the positive, your work has improved quite a bit all ready. Well done Sir.

I just go with the natural environmental light and thats almost always blue so I've just mainly stuck with that. Haven't looked at deeper color theory on shadows so been sticking with basics Quote:
I'm still working on this though. I know theory for hard and soft edges... it just hasn't clicked for me yet... also doesn't help that I'm using a mouse to do this so I can't produce some results that I know I would otherwise. Quote:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() here's 4 hue variants of the same piece... 1st one is the version I ultimately finalized on, 2nd is matching someone elses' hue selections, 3rd is just the flats turned off, so only the shadow/highlight layer is there. 4th is the original color selections, before adjusted... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Was trying to get "The Dark Knight" looking colors here... not sure if I accomplished that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Messing with Zippa/half-tones for the first time... After doing what's there I realized that I should have filled the whole thing with a mid level ton and then added or subtracted based on that to get highlights. Instead of starting from scratch I decided to just play around and add highlights the normal way I do to see how it looks. |
