Becoming an Art Director

I have been trying to get in to doing something with in the Artistic Field. Does any one know any kind of projects that are looking for an artistic director to help fuel the visual sweep of a project?

I am kind of in the mindset to do a project as almost a test in order to see if I would be good at it. Does any one know of such a thing?

I am a writer and a designer, and I guess all I am looking for is some clarity as towards what projects are out there, and if anyone needs a direction as far as the look and feel of a project.
