Spiderman 2099 Samples

A happy 2016 to the online community here on DW! I made these samples for Marvel some time ago last year and I received a lot of great constructive feedback. I would like to share the samples here for more comments and criticisms. Thanks for your interest.

There are a lot of good things going on here. I get a good idea of what is going on even though there are no words, which is an awesome thing to achieve. You also got Spider-Man's eyes really well and they are consistent. I've seen a lot of artist who were actually drawing the Spider-Man comics make them too small or get the wrong angle for them, but yours are very well done.

While you got Spider-Man's eyes down, the red webbing going down his torso is way too thin. I recommend that you expand it and shrink down his stomach to give him a more toned look. In a lot of these shots, he looks fat. The design for Spot is also lackluster. He looks a little more creepy here than most of his appearances, but at the same time he looks too blank, especially in the face. He doesn't look like a reoccurring villain. Different variations might have worked better. For what you are going for here, I would recommend that look where he had one giant hole covering his face.

There is a lot of great work here and I'm happy to hear that you've already received a lot of helpful feedback on this piece. There are a lot of positive things going on here and the biggest critiques I have are design aspects, which are easy to change.

By the way, I look forward to seeing the next chapter of 'Roleplayers'. Keep up the good work.

Wow, thanks so much Michael Ford! I see your point about making Spiderman more lean and your feedback about character design.

Thank you for checking out Roleplayers! I appreciate your interest in my work and you taking the time to give me your valuable feedback. I wish you a great year ahead. Cheers!

For what it's worth, I really like the idea you have for the Spot's design. I haven't read every comic, so I don't know if you were playing off of something already done, but the menagerie of hands coming from all the different angles is really intimidating looking. The image in the second page of his smile, with the arm sticking out of an eye socket and a cheek etc, is very creepy.

However, the fact that he appears that way in every panel, even when he's been knocked out, makes it suddenly seem less like a twisting, shifting mass of hands constantly appearing through random spots, and more like he's just got big hands dangling out of his face goofilly all the time. I'd suggest saving that for one big impactful scene. Also, you could try maybe just having fingers sticking out at points, like his hand is hanging onto the edge of the spot, which might be the bridge of his eye socket, or a cheekbone. More variety in the madness that is all these shifting limbs, is what I'm saying.

I also think it would look better if he reverted to normal once he was KO'd.

To me, some of the poses are also a bit static. The runners in the first panel that are in the immediate foreground seem just a little awkward. Spider-Man in the first page is standing in a strange position, even if he has just been punched. Doing little things like shifting the scene in Page 3 Panel 3 forward just a second, to where Spidey's fist has carried through instead of just first contact will convey a lot more energy, I think.

Overall, the work is solid. I really like the shots and the ideas behind all of it. As was already said, it conveys what is happening without a single word and that's not easy. Most of the scenes also already have a nice depth to them.

Of course I'm no professional! Take my words with a grain of salt. If something that I've said sounds like something you were already thinking, then great. If you think I'm wrong, I very well might be. Good work and good luck!

Hi Sully, thanks for your feedback. The design for Spot was based on this reference: http://www.spiderfan.org/characters/...ot/spot-01.jpg
So I cannot really take credit for the design, haha and I must admit I do not know a lot about the villain Spot in the Marvel universe. He seemed a bizarre and weird looking character to me and that was what I tried to capture in my sample.

You are absolutely spot on (pun?) about the static poses. It's one of the major criticisms I received and something that I have to work on.

Thank you so much Sully for your kind words and feedback. Happy 2016!
