Yes the video is essential. It's your one opportunity to get people emotionally involved with things like motion, music, humor, meeting the people behind the project (or whatever else you choose to use). The video is also a valuable tool to prove your professionalism/seriousness about the project. It was mentioned that no amount of good video will make a turd project look good, and that's mostly true, but that turd project may still get funded if the video is PERFECT.

Small goals or people with a gigantic following might be able to get away with no/bad video, but those same projects would possibly quadruple their fundings with the right video.

Page layout and reward structure & pricing (as well as the cover image chosen) are all part of the whole. All need to be in line for optimal funding, but the video is #1 priority. This is because:

MOST backers view the video first, then skim the page.
SOME of backers skim the page first then watch some of the video
SOME backers don't watch the video at all, but prefer to read about the project in detail.

The video is critical for a majority of backers, so I would suggest always spending a lot of time/thought on that dang video!

We GET IT Amon! You LOVE Kickstarter and want to marry it at a Kickstarted wedding, and have little Kickstarter babies!

In interest of trying to understand, is your major dislike for the funding platform because of the trust factor ( no written guarantee of reward return)? Most opposers of crow funding are adverse to the idea because of that.

I guess i must be in the slim minority then, as i don't consider how expertise in video production translates into being able to deliver a quality product on time, especially comics or 2 d art. Maybe i underestimate the sheer shallowness of people who will give a shitty project money because a 3 minute video amuses them. For film pitches and product demos, of course, it makes sense. But watching some guy circle jerk into a webcam about his comic? Id rather see finished pages and interesting rewards and of course some sort of previous track record. Saying "this project would have made more in pledges with a video or a better video" it laughably unscientific because there is no control group and no way to prove the hypothesis. I think Kickstarter oversells the importance of videos for some (SOME!) projects.

Lets face it, most comic people have a face for radio and a voice for print. I'd rather just see finished work and a concise pitch rather than you blathering on about your passion and seeing your annoying kids in the video.

@Studio-Hades

Yes, you are in the slim minority.

Plus, all that you're saying is your personal opinion, not based on the statistical results of Kickstarter campaign history. And you're attitude got really crummy there at the end. People's annoying kids? Circle ... yuck. Come on. I think we'd all like to keep Creator Community a professional atmosphere for aspring creators to learn from.

If you look up the success rate of campaigns with no videos versus campaigns with videos you'll see the difference.

Well, sorry to offend your delicate Victorian sensibilities. The video vs no video Kickstarter data if flawed because in order to make an accurate assessment, you'd have to run the identical campaign twice, one with a video and one without, in order to get accurate data. Otherwise its comparing apples and oranges. You also cant prove a negative. As i have stated numerous times, videos ARE important or even required for product design tech or films. Just not for comics or 2d art.

Having kids in your video of the product is not geared or for children IS unprofessional. How would your pitch go to Julie Schwartz at DC go if you showed up in a t shirt with your two kids and droned on about your "passion". He'd likely tell you to get the f*ck out of his office. Pitches are pitches, regardless of the audience. It's entirely professional to expect someone to keep it brief, show some great work, and not waste your time.

Fans of your work, and those that are already familiar don't need or care about the video.

The video is for those that are NOT familiar. And yes, they need more then just words on the screen. Although some AMAZING art might be enough. But really, video is far more effective.

So yeah, the video is going to be pretty important in pulling in new fans, and investors.

Kickstarter came out and defended the Braff and 'Mars campaigns (i'm presently looking for the article again, will post it if I find it).

In it they said that the thousands of fans of both Braf and 'Mars in fact 'stuck around' with 'thousands' of fans donating to over 2000 other projects on kickstarter to the tune of over $200,000 to those projects.

As annoying as it may seem, superstar artists, film makers, actresses BRING IN NEW people/money to the kickstarter community.
