Convention Goals

So I just read an article by Bill Tucci who says his first time exhibiting at San Diego in 1992 or 93, he sold 2000 comic books and 1000 posters. Yowza! Now that's a success.

I sold aproxx. 180 books at Chicago last year. I only had one product, Crozonia #1, so that was alot of hustle getting 180 new readers. I considered that a success although I had brought 300 books.

I just printed Issue 2, so my goal is matching 180 issues of Crozonia #1, and 120 of Crozonia #2. Selling a handfull of sketchbooks and posters as well. And make some more business contacts. That sounds ambitious yet reasonable right? What are your goals for San Diego, and Chicago? No one seems to want to share their actual sales figures, except me:

Maybe it's too private, like revealing your salary. So what I'd like to know are your conventions goals, Artist alley? Corporate booth? How many books are you bringing. Ball park estimates and such....

What did you have at your booth?
Did you focus on selling every issue or were you working on doing sketches or something else to that effect?
The NYCC numbers are a little disappointing though.

and I would probably lower the issue 2 goals a little. Do you discount the books from cover price at conventions or will you be making any deals like issue 1 3 bucks issue 2 3 bucks or both for $5 or do you just sell them at cover straight up.

Wasn't Tucci referring to Shi, which became a massive hit and is now worth like barely the cover price?

Anyway, I think he struck on some gold with Shi, which face it followes the formula of scantialy clad women with death sticks

yeah it was Shi and it was during the boom era of comics.

I was more sales oriented. I did do about 5-10 free sketches at each show, but I find it takes away from sales. So this year, I am charging $5 for sketches.

NYCC was disappointing, but I have already booked for next year. There were mistakes made, that will be rectified second time around.

I will be offering package deals such as 1&2 for $5. And packages involving the posters, and ashcans as well.

So anyone want to share some goals or sales figures?

Still have to give Tucci credit. Shi was part of the Bad Girl trend, but I always thought Shi had a little bit more substance. Does the comic book boom really matter in terms of convention sales? I think that only applies to retail sales. Tucci was selling all those books when San Diego was around 40,000 in attendance. I've met him and he clearly knows how to sell, network, and is approachable. Alot of indy guys in the artist alley could take note.

San Diego is too large now, that's why I'm staying away from it untill I get bigger! The other three shows I'm attending (Chicago, NY, Toronto) are in the 40 -50K range, which I think gives you most chance to maximize sales.

The property definitley makes a different. So does a female lead and an era where all comics sold more. If it was Tucci first convention, then he was selling a #1 issue which helps even more. Color helps. Everything helps. At that point the only thing Shi had going against was not being about superheroes.

The best con I've gone cost me less than $100 and I sold over $500 in comics (both retail and wholesale). The worse con, I did less than $150 the entire weekend (3 days). I use cons as an advertising expense because the more cons I do the more people know about the property and the more return visits to the web site I receive and the more my online sales increase. That's why everything I sale has the URL on it from comics to poster and even sketch books.

I do most of the smaller shows (Pittsburgh, Heroes, Baltimore, etc). I've done a couple one day shows. When possible I also take the time to visit the local shops as it's all about spreading the word.

I don't want to take anything away from Tucci, I own the complete first run of Shi. I'm just saying he really caught lighting in a bottle and is the exception to the rule when it comes to judging convention success.

I was one of those 180 in Chicago last year.

This year at Chicago, the goal is to spread the word about Task Force 1, so I'll be mobile (didn't get a table this year... but I'll probably have signings set up at some booths around the show though).

I'll share.

I sold 101 Johnny Saturns no 1's last year, and about 60 other comics I have done (Shades of Blue, Digital Webbing, etc. etc.). Mistakes were made, and I've learned a lot about salesmanship since then. We sold some sketchbooks and posters, too, but not many.

This year, I'm making it more about promotion than sales.

My main convention goal: Meet fellow DWers in person.

Followed by: Network for talent to work on my book. Pimp my book. Get mentally ready for WWTexas, where the book debuts.

At NYCC did you have a booth, small press table or artist alley table?

Hey Steve, I had an artist alley table, but I made the mistake of sharing that table when another artist asked. So that teeny 6ft table became a 3 ft table, and I had no where to put my banner because the space behind us was so tight. So there was zero visibility.

The reason I shared the table was, that I am a nice guy , split the table fee, and I honestly felt I could sell almost as many books with half a table after having so much success at a festival where I split the table as well.

Not making that mistake again. I'm going to do a full artist alley table at NYC. Chicago has huge tables (8ft) and I'll have two tables in Toronto (12ft). Not so ready to shell out a booth space just yet.


I don't remember there being small press tables in NYCC....

No plans for this year, just some random booth whoring and having fun. Laying low until next year when I'm planing on launching something a little different.

My usualy goal is $600 in sales, regardless of the con. Usually I only attend 2-3 day cons though and I'm selling higher priced items (trades) with a larger margine for profit. I include prints in that $600 figure as well, not just trades. The last year was a bust averaging about $300 in sales per con. With the new thing planned I expect a shift though for next year, either the profit will be going up a few hundred or down, we'll have to see how people take the new thing.
