Comic as Submission Kit

I've decided it's finally time to get my act together. I'm never going to be a writer sitting at home pining over how much I'd like to be a writer. But, well as a writer, it's hard to show of your talent without having concise to show off. Now granted, I could just try and put together story ideas with a bit of sample script, but that really doesn't seem to work all that well. So, I'm finally going to self-publish a comic.

But I have a question for any of you creators or those editorially inclined. I want to put together a comic to showcase myself as a talent, because I want to focus on myself as a writer, I was thinking of doing three short stories to show variety in genres and writing styles. On the other hand, one 24 page story would have more saleability and it would be an example of working in the regular comic format rather than short stories. Which do you think would be a better show case of talent, a variety of fully formed short stories or one 24 page story?

Another issue for consideration is I want to be able to pay whatever artist(s) work on this project with me. If I do three separate stories, it's less of a long term commitment for the artist and conceivably, with three artists working simultaneously, could have a quick turn around. One longer story means I only have to deal with one artist possibly flaking out or disappearing, but if they disappear after doing 10 pages, that's a lot more that I need redone in the long run.

So to those of you who have put together your own comics, and those of you who would potentially be looking at this as a sample of my writing, which do you think is stronger: one 22-24 page story or three 8 page stories? Both would also have plot, character, and script samples and probably sketches to final page breakdowns.

All the editors care about is the final product. I got a lot of mileage out of ILL CONCEIVED. It was a 32-page one-shot with 28-pages of story. I sent it out as a sample to editors all over and got 2 Dark Horse editors (one of which I am on a first name basis with now) to give me feedback. It also got me some work from Narwain before they stopped publishing, and even peaked the interest of Hollywood. In fact that littel book is still peaking Hollywood interest.

I'd go with the one-shot, 22-pages or more.

My best

I would also go with the one-shot. I think it gives a better idea what you are capable of than two or three shorter pieces.

I'd say a little bit of everything in one package would make for a great portfolio type deal. If your looking for a place to get the package out, Lulu.com is basicly free to start although their prices are quite high it could still make for a nice one off for you to show at cons.

I'd say long form. It's amazing all the doors that were suddenly opened by the first issue of Redchapel that had not been opened by my earlier, shorter works.
